I’ve always thought this filly talented but not entirely straightforward, and she’s turned into one of those I just can’t ‘catch’.
I backed her last time, and although she reportedly scoped badly afterwards, it now seems close to standard practice for trainers of classy horses to report some ailment after losing (in TF’s defeat in this last year, JG said she didn’t like the rain in her face).
I think she needs exactly the kind of ride she got in her last victory, under R Hughes – she doesn’t want to know she’s in a race until the business end.
I was going to ask for your thoughts, but having got to this fourth para, I’ve talked myself out of backing her. No doubt she’ll hose up!
August 22, 2013 at 11:09 #449146There has to be a chance The Fugue is not as good as she was last year Joe. However, there are also good reasons to excuse this season’s form. I take a lot of notice of trainer form.
First time up John Gosden was generally in poorish form and runners generally needing their first run. Ran ok considering reportedly woolly.
Then the Eclipse where scoped badly afterwards, with Gosden still not in top shape. Ran no sort of race there and looked something obviously wrong, so I would think the trainer is telling the truth.
Gosden is in great form now and is far more bullish about The Fugue now than he was back in June/July. She has the fast ground that suits so well and should help her stay the trip. With Venus De Milo and Scintillula in the field there should hopefully be enough pace to settle well. Has the best form in the race, though admittedly a few others have scope for improvement.
If undecided Joe, you could wait and see what TV paddock judges say.
Value Is EverythingAugust 22, 2013 at 12:57 #449156I would probably try and put you off Joe.
I too backed her last time as I thought she ran very well in the POW after a long lay. She can be excused her last run clearly but we are still talking about a horse that, for all her ability, has only won 3 times and never over a mile and a half.
In fact if today was over 10f I would probably back her again but I am not convinced that she truly stays 12f. She seemed to get outstayed last year and I think she is up against some quality 3 years olds today who definitely DO stay 12f.
I think Riposte and Venus De Milo who I think is very progressive and will love that long straight.
The Fugue is clearly very classy and it may be that that is enough today but 9-4 is a bit skinny for me for a horse who has plenty to prove.

August 22, 2013 at 13:00 #449157Fair points, Ginger. A strict reading of her form suggests to me that fast ground might not quite be the asset her connections think it is.
Anyway, I’m going to leave her alone, so pile on, as she will doubtless embarrass me once again!
August 22, 2013 at 13:01 #449158Thanks, Jonibake. Let’s hope we’re both right
August 22, 2013 at 14:13 #449166Fugue for me. She operates at a level that i don’t think todays opposition would be considered for. The Bolger horse might be over priced.

Correction – you should definitely back her!

August 22, 2013 at 14:45 #449170As forecast . . . I can never get her right!
August 22, 2013 at 16:44 #449183Either way, she’s a gorgeous horse and it was lovely to see her win today.
August 22, 2013 at 17:13 #449191That was wonderful to watch.

August 23, 2013 at 09:29 #449254Not much use now, but I just read this thread. Scoping for mucus, which was the excuse given after his last place finish to Al Kazeem is a 100% legitimate excuse, they just can’t breathe (usually when it comes to the business end of the race). Somewhat weather and season-dependent, but if it shows up on the day you should just ignore the run.
In Hong Kong they release all post-race vet examinations or scopes (if trainers request it) results: whether they scoped blood, bleeding attacks, lame the next day. Over time people have learned tha generally speaking mucus is one of those that can be dismissed.
According to sectionals: her Ascot run was brilliant, good enough that she might have threatened the front two. Only looked moderate on paper because of the very slow pace,
August 23, 2013 at 10:20 #449259Was the Lucky Kristale information made available before the Lowther?
Scoped badly recently, then clear just before the race, but hadn’t worked for 10 days. So Margarson said afterwards.
