Tinkering with the idea of going to the tingle creek meeting (sat), if I do it will be my first "proper" racecourse visit
been pointing & to bath many years ago!Whats it like? premier or grnadstand, I want to take photo’s so a good vantage point would be good!
any advice much appreciated
November 23, 2007 at 11:49 #126392You certainly don’t need to go in the Members (Premier) – viewing is excellent from the Grandstand enclosure and you can get fairly close to the last fence by walking down to the rails.
You’ll also be able to get close to the horses in the pre-parade ring and on the walkway from there to the paddock.
If you go by train (even if you only park at a station down the line and do the last bit by train that can save time in traffic round the course), you get to walk across the course and see the fences on the far side from close up before racing.

November 23, 2007 at 11:57 #126396Aldaniti, as Alan says, Sandown is a cracking course for viewing.
The day I was there it was fairly quiet and I don’t know what it is like on a busy day, as Tingle Creek Day will be.??
The "Rhododendron Walk", as it is known, is a great place for getting pics of the horses both before and after the race.

Is that the bit you can only see from the prem eclosure?

Last year on Tingle Creek day it was busy but still comfortable.
One advantage of Sandown is, with the space they have, it can take a good crowd and still be comfortable.
Re the Rhododendron Walk if memory serves me correct I am pretty certain it is in the Premier enclosure.
November 23, 2007 at 12:40 #126409Thanks Paul,
I must admit as I will be on my feet for best part of the day, trainers are more appealing to wear rather than shoes/boots so I am tempted to go in the grandstand bit,
Am I still able to see the parade of retired horses etc from the grandstand area?November 23, 2007 at 12:45 #126411Aldaniti
Unless they change things this year you will be able to see the retired horses.

Seconded.
The viewing, with the stands at the top of a gentle slope down to the course rather than being pitched at course level, are how Ascot should have been rather than the witless arrangement post-rebuild.
You can see plenty for a course of its size, although some of the in-field golf course furniture and buildings incommode the view slightly.

November 23, 2007 at 15:28 #126433Just a little word of advice. Be discreet when you are taking pitcures and don’t try walking into the course with a big camera hanging round your kneck………Only those authorised are legally allowed to take pics.
Incidentally, Anyone know if Ken Bright is still an official race course photographer?
November 23, 2007 at 16:13 #126441Really? I do have a fairly large camera (D80) but I normally carry it around in a backpack,
Are all racecourses like that?
November 23, 2007 at 16:24 #126442Rules are you can take photographs for personal use only.
As long as you don’t venture into any restricted areas, parade ring, track etc., you should not have any problem.
Oh and most importantly – no flash!!!
November 23, 2007 at 16:49 #126445One of the best meetings of the year and i never miss it
Crowd is just about the right size for atmosphere and ease of movement
Make sure you wander right over to the pre parade ring and winners enslosures too
Would agree with AP. Although i drive these days, walking across the course and past those fences is a great way to first arrive
November 23, 2007 at 20:19 #126478I am lazy and don’t like the mile walk fron the station to the course especially the steep uphill finish into members. I get the train to Surbiton and get a cab from the station rank that delivers me to the door for a tenner.
November 23, 2007 at 22:24 #126498We are traveling from Essex along the M25, its junc 10 isn’t it?
November 23, 2007 at 22:30 #126500I travel from Ireland for this meeting each year and while I generally prefer the flat, I consider it to be be the most enjoyable meeting of the year.
November 25, 2007 at 17:46 #126967Any idea how much time I need to allow to get from J10 M25 to the racecourse?
November 25, 2007 at 17:53 #12697015 minutes with a clear run, but allow double that, because the last time I approached Sandown from that direction there was traffic queueing all the way from Esher down the A244 back to the junction with the A3.
