Can anybody tell me whether a horses timeform rating (from a racecard) has been adjusted to include claims by inexperienced jockeys?
i.e Horse A rated 102 at weights but upgraded to 105 due to 3lbs jockey claim OR Horse A rated 102, no account taken of claim as this is in exchange for inexperience.
Many thanks in advance

The rating does not take into account any rider’s claim. It’s a subjective matter as to which jockeys are good value for their allowance and which ones aren’t, so it’s left to the subscriber to decide.

I ‘m going to do this using my archives:
Check at random 2 consecutive races of 100 different horses.
In the first of the two with apprentice on board, in the second with jockey.
I will express everything in equivalent 7f time and see if there is a difference in the gross average.
I will do this when I have time, so remember to check.* in 100 random cases anything can happen, but theoretically the various happenings cancel out one another and we should get what we are looking for, the difference accruing between jockey and apprentice.

March 19, 2011 at 23:18 #346294Hi Corm, hope you had a good week at the Festival.
It’s not an area that ‘Timeform’ produce and evaluate data from. I think there are other companies that do, I’m thinking mainly of Whitley’s jockey ratings, but I can’t say I know much about them.
That’s not to say that I and others in the office don’t have opinions of apprentices to look out for. I think Sophie Doyle has improved massively over the last 12 months and her 3 lb claim is an assett. Similarly I don’t think there are many other 5 lb claimers that are better than Lee Topliss. Richard Fahey wouldn’t allow him to ride on AW this winter to protect that claim. A couple of 7 lb claimers I think we’ll hear more of during the turf season are Jason Hart who has looked tidy in a handful of rides and has the support of Mark Johnston whilst Thomas Brown has some pretty big boots to fill following Probert and Buick at Andrew Balding’s, but I like what I’ve seen so far.
