    Tin Man said…
Time of year probably mainly, Newmarket are due to race on Wednesday and it must be in doubt, currently heavy.

I’m going on Wednesday Tin Man and I’ve no worries that meeting will not go ahead..it will certainly pinpoint those 2yo’s who love a bit of cut.. :good:
Newmarket just soaks up the rain and I remember one Final Meeeting at the end of October when it slushed it down and they still went ahead…lots of withdrawals but Newmarket is like the Windmill Theatre of racing.. :rose: Jac

“Always remember the very last Champion Stakes held at Newmarket when Twice Over won and Frankel won the Dewhurst. The feel good factor abounded and THEN… they took our race away and it’s never been the same again
On that day, apart from Aiam To Prosper 16/1 who won the Cesarewitch, not one horse priced over 5/1 won on the day”.

    ———————————-

    Isn’t that selective comparison, Jac.

What about the Newmarket Champions Day year where only one horse won at single figure odds?… And that one beat an odds-on fav. With 4 of the 7 races (all Group races) won by 20/1+ shots. The Champion Stakes itself won by a 25/1 shot from a 12/1 shot and another 25/1 in third.

Compare that with an Ascot Champions Day, the year only one horse won at double figure odds and that 10/1 shot only won because the 5/4 fav reared at the start and took a fierce hold. When we saw the best performance anywhere all year in the Champion Stakes. 4/5, 13/8 and 3/1 favourites all winning and two other favs second… And that on “soft” ground.

    We can all be selective.

We may be guilty of dismissing some larger priced winners as lesser quality horses, just because they were larger prices on soft ground?

Oh Ginge..lighten up.lol I’m just remembering the most feel good day ever at the track before Frankel won the 2000 Guineas. :yahoo:
Funny that I was going to end my post by saying..I bet Ginger will be on my back after these remarks. and like the genie out of the lamp you appeared.☄️🧞‍♂️

I appreciate all the facts and figures Ginge of course I do but I wouldn’t enjoy my racing half as much as if I had to take all that into consideration before I posted or put a bet on a horse.

Most of us reminisce about our good days we tend to forget the others. If I’m being selective then so be it that’s just me. ✨️✨️Jac

I was gutted when BAAEED failed to win the Champion Stakes last year.

Do we think that was mainly the ground?

“Newmarket is not everyone’s cup of tea, some say it’s bleak, it’s too far from London, difficult to get too and so on, but horses do run well there, the ground is always raceable and being chalk based it drains well”.

    ———————

You must admit to having rose coloured specs when it comes to Newmarket, Jac.

If “bleak” means a straight course that has awful viewing both from the stands and on TV, then yes.

Got no problem with where it is situated for “Champion Day” purposes, although is impossible from the West.

Newmarket may have better drainage, but in my experience it has far more days than Ascot with a pace bias. Not due to ground conditions but.. Tailwinds massively favour those ridden prominently and headwinds favour those held up, much more than they do at Ascot – because of Newmarket’s openness / heath.

Some meetings (particularly those this late in the year) also having a golden highway up the rail.

As a “fair to all” course, I usually much prefer Ascot myself.

You’re suggesting Newmarket has Champions Day, Jac.
Therefore it should be about facts, not light hearted.
Or are you really suggesting the authorities change Champions Day to Newmarket because it’s your favourite track?

Yes, I do take my rose coloured specs to Newmarket every time I go Ginge along with my notebook and pen and proud to say that I have seen most of the big classic winners in the flesh run there as 2yo’s.

I’m not a fan of Ascot after a rain soaked Ladies day where viewing was so restricted we had to go into the on site betting shop to watch it on tv. :negative: and we paid top price enclosure tickets for that experience apart from that it’s an awkward journey from where I live whereas Newmarket I can avoid the main roads and drive all the way through villages to the track.
I absolutely love it there and if there are tailwinds then back front runners with headwinds back those that like to have a bit of cover. Also horses for courses. Basically know your track and bet accordingly..so many just throw money at the bookies on the favourites..the bookies of course love it….but there you go my rose tinted glasses are on again and just like people love to follow a certain football team I support my local track Newmarket it’s the best training ground for 2yo’s prior to going up in grade that’s why so many Classic winners have run and won their Maidens there… B-) 🕶 Jac :rose:

Of course I wouldn’t expect authorities to change because of Newmarket being my favourite track Ginge…but it is something I would hope for but know won’t happen.

Completely agree. There is more to life and racing than numbers and statistics.

Based on comments here and on other racing forums, lots of people preferred the old cards at Ascot in late September and at Newmarket in October and do not believe what we have now is an improvement.

I do wonder if Dettori wasn’t such a big part of the day and worked out well for the scriptwriter, how the meeting would have been seen then?

Okay, great run by King of Steel, but………..
Pretty ordinary to me that the meeting did not set itself apart from others.

On a side note, yesterday offered a fine preview of how a premierisation Saturday would look. Like it?

TRYING TO MAKE A CASE FOR NEWMARKET..

If it rains or it’s blowing you off the street in Newmarket you can always go for a nose and a bit of free warmth in the horseracing museum which is located nicely in the high street.

In 1850 the town had 500 inhabitants

“Hallo Jack there’s another Jack moved into the town ”

Yes I’m losing my singularity and it’s confusing as people talk about Jack and they may be talking about the new fella.

In 1900 numbers had crept up 2000

    …Even more Jacks now Jack.

They had horse drawn carriages in the street

I’ve seen a picture taken in 1911 with those carriages in the street. Quite a lot of horsey atmosphere.

In 1950 some of the now 5000 inhabitants attended the centenarian Jack’s funeral – it wasn’t the first Jack ! Not sure if they had those famous sausages back then – probably did and only three firms are given permission to make em these days. You could still move about in the 50’s and the yoof had plenty of space to jog about to ‘ I wanna hold your hand’.

in 1970 the town took on biblical proportions as the special sausages and eleven loaves and 4.2 fishes fed the 11000 pop.

About 19000 today and the town is bursting with life.

Might be time to take a flight and visit another horseracing museum with a bit more legroom, this time located inside a racecourse with an entrance fee of £1.00. ( free on non race days ). That is to get in the racecourse the museum is free. They’ve got a diaper changing room too – although I’m not quite at that stage.

    Newmarket Tears

    Pore Jack is daid,
    Pore Jack 42 is daid,
All gather ’round his cawfin now and cry
He had a heart of gold
    But he was very old
Oh why did such a feller have to die?

    HEADSTONE

    1850…500
    1900…2000
    1950…5000
    1970…11000
    Now… 19000.

I made an error and have corrected the false data.

I had a welcome day off racing today to recharge the batteries!

I hope this posting doesn’t shunt the shunting horse to history on the previous page but which filum wins this is down to the three monkeys to decide. Mr P’s emotive masterpiece may have just nicked it – best leave this to the judges.
If you cared to watch the Japanese one you will note that that the visiting foreigner was unlucky in the race as she picked the favourite in stall one. The wonderfully exuberant but slow walking Japanese girl won it with ticket six if my eyes caught the flash by correctly and my guess is it was 14-1 watching the delight mirrored in her eyes. Strange because 7 is considered the luckiest number but it is less easy to identify on a horse cloth than 6 which in my eyes is a number with inherent beauty.

If you want more on the museum and hopefully some racing executives in Blighty will be taking some notes of how to sell a day at a racecourse and send everyone home happy.

Fair enough, Jac. I was only trying to put the other side. So we can have a balanced view when discussing where Champions Day should be.
Without me doing the same the other way, it didn’t seem fair on Ascot. Picking good days at Newmarket to compare with a day at Ascot that didn’t go exactly to plan. :rose:

Everyone has their favourite racecourse/s and so they should. It’s something that makes Racing so special. :good:
    Champions Day for Newbury!
