i live in hope that we will see emmas top lip move before the end of the flat season.
May 16, 2010 at 10:38 #295920I think Pompete was referring to Hayley Turner’s reported influence on the Spencer household, TAPK.
I do hope you are not suggesting there"s a "Manage et troi" with the Coltish
Syrian
going on?
May 16, 2010 at 12:58 #295946Agreed, it was quite frosty between the Spencers.
May 16, 2010 at 22:32 #296025Emma Spencer and Mike Cattermole may appear as eye candy to some (there’s no accounting for taste) but to suggest they’re good for racing is laughable.
Spencer and Cattermole’s thin veneer of racing wisdom wouldn’t get them a job on Thommo’s tipping line
In fact Reet, Mike Cattermole’s "wisdom" is not thin at all. Mike is a regular in the West Berkshire Racing Club Annual Quiz. I assure you he knows about racing.
Why not get a team of four together next January Reet, and take on the "Freelance 4". And for that matter the "West Berks 4". Then we’ll see just who knows about racing.

You’re confusing being an anorak with understanding racing well enough to make money at it, (No surprise there, really
).
At a guess, I’d say that 1-in-1000 viewers would like to know who rode the winner of the 1936 Derby, the other 999 would be far more interested in knowing how to find the winner of the next race.
Mike Cattermole is not the answer!
May 16, 2010 at 23:14 #296028Reet,
The quiz includes two sections on the previous flat and jumps seasons. Mike knows the form book very well and can talk about all aspects of racing. I don’t know if he is a good tipster, why does everyone working on C4 need to be a good tipster? Do you really want all on C4 sacked bar Jim McGrath? Mike knows the subject, is informative and is a good presenter of racing. That should be enough.

His knowledge of the form book is superficial (that’s being generous), and he couldn’t tip himself out of a pushchair.
There are plenty of presenters (on all 4 TV channels) both he and Emma Ramsden couldn’t hold a candle to, so how is good for racing for them to front up one of it’s major shop windows?May 17, 2010 at 11:23 #296052Emma Spencer and Mike Cattermole may appear as eye candy to some (there’s no accounting for taste) but to suggest they’re good for racing is laughable.
Racing is a sport, not a quiz show, and needs to be presented by people who know what they’re talking about if it’s ever to make sense to the aspirant punter.Fantastic post and point.
May 18, 2010 at 07:56 #296129Back to the stats issue, I think the right stats can be very good for finding the winner in some races. For example they have resulted in two selections in the 2010 and 2009 2000 Guineas; both times one was the winner and one came down the field.
Point is the stats need to be well researched and coincidental stats ignored. For example a history of single-figure drawn winners in fields of 30 runners is interesting, in fields of less than 10 runners is not.
Also the type of race matters; some work well with stats analysis some do not.
Now if C4 did stats properly their Tanyas Titbits would be worth paying attention to. Unfortunately they generally do it superficially so it’s a waste of time. Sort of sums up the whole program really; given their resources and access to participants in the sport they could do so much better than.

Doubtless you’re right that most people are more interesting in making a quick and easy buck, without any personal effort, than they are in enriching their lives through study and appreciation of history.
That’s the human condition. Most people would like to bring back hanging and pay no income tax, too.
Sneering at Mike Cattermole as an "anorak" for his racing knowledge says a lot about those who do it, little about the man himself.
May 18, 2010 at 13:54 #296148Exactly Pinza,
Though I wear the anorak with pride, so I would say that wouldn’t I?

…. now I
dare
you to suggest that to Sir Rod Street (for a substantial consultancy fee, of course!)

More chance of

winning than Hayley getting involved with its Jockey!
Gossip eh!

Who’s gossiping?
….and if you can’t trust the Daily Mail then who?
Quite an interesting thread and one that’s made it me change my mind. It has never really occurred to me that anybody actually takes any notice of what anyone of C4 has to say. Stupid of me perhaps but I’ve never really watched the bits between races, other than some of the excellent features they do, and just (wrongly) assumed no one else did either.
I find it astonishing that someone would or wouldn’t have a bet on what someone else said or didn’t say.
May 22, 2010 at 07:27 #296449Todays words of wisdom from Tom Lee,
Toms Titbit – The last 9 winners of The Silver Bowl at Haydock have come from the first 3 in the betting.
Wonder what happened 10 years ago and has what occurred in the last 9 runnings any bearing on what will happen in the next 9?
Will punters be on tenterhooks close to off hoping their fancy is in the first 3 in the betting knowing it will have a better chance than if it’s returned 4th fav or above?
March 15, 2012 at 00:34 #21258I know few have been critical of Channel 4 already this week but it just goes from bad to worse.
I’m watching Wednesday’s highlights show and Alice Plunkett has just said (on the Champion Chase), "So a race that was full of drama; and that drama began at just the second fence when Wishful Thinking and Richard Johnson fell…"
Well excuse me love, it wasn’t the second fence, it was the fourth.
Fair enough if you are reporting this immediately after the race, but this is a highlights show that has been recorded in darkness (so at least three hours after the race) and you can’t even report simple facts. What’s worse is the fact that no-one from the Channel 4 team has picked up on this mistake and had it edited before the show went out at midnight.
Plunkett then went on to say Henderson, "broke the all-time record yesterday (meaning Tuesday) having had 41 winners to become the winning most trainer here of all time and he added to that by having four winners here (Wednesday)".
Well sorry again, but on Tuesday he only equalled the record, not broke it.
I know it may be trivial to some, but listening to crap like this, especially when recorded with every opportunity to get the facts right, is very annoying.
Looks like RUK for me tomorrow then.
