AngloGerman – is the Thumbs Up you referred to in another thread the grey gelding 2005 Intikhab/Exclusive Approval … and what is a "lake" race please? Very sad to hear of any horrendous accident.
I have just checked and I think it must be – he was trained by Donald McCain until last month – now in Germany. He was a favourite of mine and so desperately sorry to hear he’s been lost.September 6, 2011 at 23:42 #370287There is a video news report on it at

it’s in German though.
WARNING it shows the fall and the aftermath.
September 7, 2011 at 16:36 #370382What a horrible end for a lovely horse … RIP Thumbs Up.
September 7, 2011 at 16:43 #370385Sorry, it really was "your" Thumbs Up.
A "lake race" a steeple chase where the horses have to cross a lake, normally once. If it’s deep they have to swim but most of the times there is no need to. Unfortunately the horse seemed to be to fast when entering the lake
September 10, 2011 at 17:12 #370676That’s horrendous, poor Thumbs Up. My German is non-existent but google translate suggests the jockey’s been banned for a month as a result?
September 11, 2011 at 17:56 #370748Looked a horrid fall pleased the jockey was banned, am I correct in assuming Thumbs Up broke his back?
My german is non existant and not pressing the right buttons for google translate….its a senior thing…!September 11, 2011 at 19:18 #370752I could only watch the clip once and out of the corner of my eye and I know no German … I don’t know what poor Thumbs Up’s injury was but surely the water should have "cushioned" his fall – not like him hitting the ground at a pace … he seemed to go in very fast and at an angle … but like I said I could hardly watch – so upset as he was a particular favourite …
September 11, 2011 at 21:49 #370760water is surprisingly unsoft, Ten Plus, especially hit at speed, and its also hard to move through – of course we don’t know what the bottom of the lake was like either. However I think the problem came when he was hit by the horse following.
Without wanting to be too blunt, my understanding from better German speakers than myself is that a post mortem is or has been done and there was uncertainty at the time as to whether he drowned or died from injuries sustained.
September 12, 2011 at 09:54 #370776I clicked on the video link but only got a German financial report
Maybe just as well. The whole thing sounds absolutely horrific. Galloping racehorses into deep lakes? And thay say our Grand National is cruel!!!
RIP Thumbs Up
