Bad enough that we have three jockeys killed in Australia and the US but unbelievable to think they were all on the flat.
October 16, 2014 at 08:14 #492453It’s very sad news. I do think of the two disciplines flat can be the most dangerous due to the higher speed and the fact that most accidents happen without warning. With jumps often jockeys can see that their mount isn’t going to make the jump safely and can make some small preparation for a fall. Also in the UK they can get training to help them fall more safely; I don’t know if the flat jockeys use it too.
Memorials to all 3 posted in that section of the forum.
October 16, 2014 at 09:27 #492468Update: all jockeys racing in the UK today will wear black armbands as a mark of respect for these young fallen colleagues.
October 16, 2014 at 18:10 #492506Very sad.
It is the fourth death involving female jockeys in Australia in the last year, although there is no suggestion that gender is an issue at play here.
Industry figures are talking about stricter veterinary checks, field sizes and the approach to interference. Australian jockey Chris Munce also questioned is style of riding and tight tracks were factors.
These fatalities bring into sharp relief, once again, the grave risks all jockeys take.
