Creeping ever closer. Must get frustrating for him to be travelling day in day out for hours to ride a 100/1 shot in a maiden hurdle but fair play to him for plodding on. Seems to be a nice bloke on TV too
December 8, 2016 at 19:35 #1276086I remember him riding a superb chase winner at Ascot over 10 yrs. ago having lost his irons way out and i was at Leicester races the following week and remember racegoers just shouting nice words at him when he came out to ride.
I cannot google it but hopefully some forum member with memory retention better than me can and the race at Ascot i refer to was a pregious one, not run of the mill.December 8, 2016 at 19:47 #1276087Blue, it was Kingscliff
December 8, 2016 at 20:20 #1276089Hope he makes it. Seems a really nice chap when interviewed.
December 8, 2016 at 20:25 #1276091Why can’t somebody give him three decent rides and let him hit the target ? I hate seeing him on no hopers still trying to get the 1000
December 8, 2016 at 20:36 #1276092VTC, thanks for that and your memory is so much better than mine and what a ride that was that day to stick with my poor memory and no, i never had money on it, ha ha.

He travelled all the way to Hexham on monday for one ride(Downtown Boy in the last) and then it refused to start!!
Thornton seems to have been chasing this milestone for ages. I hope he gets there soon.

King Harald was the horse that Choc won without any irons from the last fence at Cheltenham.

Sorry! Wrong Thornton.

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysDecember 9, 2016 at 08:08 #1276127The old memory used to better Blue, but I remember that ride well, 13 years ago now . Coincidentally, after that Ascot Race, he went on to win that years Unicoin Chase, hopefully todays winner will be as good as old Kingscliff.
December 9, 2016 at 11:38 #1276149I expect him to make it by 2019 then
The ride I remember most was in the Welsh National against his brother on Miko de Beauchene. Did he not get a bit of a slap on the wrist for the whip use
The Kingscliff incident I didn’t see live so it is a bit of a vague memory.

The reins broke, rather than the irons. The race in question:
....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.
December 9, 2016 at 17:07 #1276227Thanks for the memory.
Enjoyed seeing that again.
For a long time I’d been looking for Slip Anchor’s Derby on youtube and could only see a foreign version until finding (presumably) your work, esp.Andrew Thornton has come to the West Berkshire Racing Club events and have taken him on in our Racing Quiz too. He is a really nice bloke and can’t wait for the 1000. Can see him immediately hanging up his boots. AT is the last of his style of jockey.
Value Is EverythingDecember 9, 2016 at 17:37 #1276230Thanks for that espmadrid, terrific performance by Thornton, and it was great to
be reminded, with the football info that came up at the bottom of the screen, that
Henrik Larsson has just scored the 4th goal for Celtic. What Scottish football
wouldn’t do for a Larsson nowDecember 18, 2016 at 13:53 #1277764Its going to take him a long time if he keeps riding like he just did on Noble Legend

Possibly, but it’s simple circumstance as many of his more loyal trainers appear to be those based near the south coast. There’s almost a case to say it would be as appropriate now if the 1000th winner were to be recorded for a Seamus Mullins or a Mike Roberts or a Linda Jewell as it would an actual northern handler.
Alternatively, a quickfire hat-trick around Southwell for Caroline Bailey might do the trick. Caroline and Gerald have been as good to him as any trainer based in the Midlands or further north in recent times.
Either way, I’m sure he’ll be among the crowd, wife and kids possibly with him, as per usual as soon as the Yorkshire Area pointing season commences at Sheriff Hutton three and a half weeks from now – even if he has been at Kempton the day before and is set to ride at Plumpton the day after.
