Breaking news……..
Thistlecrack is out for the season after suffering a tendon injury
February 21, 2017 at 13:07 #1288266Desperately bad luck, hope he comes back next season as good as ever.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 21, 2017 at 13:12 #1288268All four championship winners from last year not returning due to injury. Desperately sad stuff.

Very frustrating for everyone, takes the edge off the races
February 21, 2017 at 15:01 #1288298Hope he comes back better than ever, torn tendon is a nasty one. Cheltenham is all about seeing the superstars in action, the only two left that truly fit that bill are Douvan and Altior.

Poor old Cue Card
February 21, 2017 at 16:41 #1288312Such a shame , as this year’s Gold Cup promised to be a fascinating renewal .
I cannot help but think that Colin Tizzard’s disappointment will be lessened by the fact that in Native River ( more so than Cue Card ) he still has his preferred Gold Cup entrant fit , healthy and ready to win .
Native River will take all the beating .

February 21, 2017 at 17:19 #1288315Websites have put up a list of notable absentees from this year’s Festival: Don Cossack, Coneygree, Thistlecrack, Vautour, Valseur Lido, Many Clouds, Sprinter Sacre, Ar Mad, Min, Faugheen, Annie Power…I’m sure there are/will be more. The GC & CH have been hardest hit. That is the nature of Jumps racing and similar has happened before, nevertheless, all the races will be hard fought and brilliant, some new stars will come to the fore and set up future showdowns with those in the above list who are able to return.
February 21, 2017 at 18:25 #1288325Cripes, this year’s Festival is shaping like a midweek meeting in Ludlow – no superstars …….. OK except Douvan (against what?), and Altior (ditto). Sadly my long range antepost double on Altior 5/1 Arkle & T’crack 8/1 bit the dust today
February 21, 2017 at 18:27 #1288327That’s a big kick in the nuts………..
Hopefully he’ll bounce back next year and win what should have been his this.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
February 21, 2017 at 20:20 #1288358I was really looking forward to seeing those three Tizzard horses pitch up against each other. Just shows how hard it is to even get them there, never mind win anything. I often think about how well handled Best Mate was, turning up at his peak year after year.
February 21, 2017 at 22:44 #1288393That’s my banker of Chelters gone down the swanny.
February 21, 2017 at 23:16 #1288397Perhaps the saddest thing of all is that once a tendon is injured there is a very strong chance of a recurrence. We might already have seen the best of him.
Commiserations to all involved with Thistlecrack and kudos once more to the Snooks for allowing him that chance in the King George.

Do you think the injury has its roots in the deathly hard Cotswold Chase?
February 22, 2017 at 07:40 #1288417Can’t remember so many injuries to top horses. Just goes to show bar faugheen how lucky Willie Mullins was last year with nearly all his top horses turning up and performing at Cheltenham. I’m sure the racing will be great but I’m sure there will be so many cases of what if and the winners may not get the credit they deserve. Getting horses to Cheltenham and in peak condition is hard enough as it is without this plethora of injuries.

GM I have seen a few comments elsewhere suggesting that there is no way the injury would have gone undetected for so long if it was picked up in the Cotswold. However Colin Tizzard is quoted in a few reports, including from Irishracing.com, saying “We know it’s not very serious, we haven’t done much with him since the Cotswold Chase because he had a hard race, he had a little cough afterwards and got a bit light so we were just cantering. We hadn’t done any fast work with him, we thought we’d give him a busy week this week. Obviously it stems from the race, but that’s racing, that’s horses for you.” It seems he is pointing to the Cotswold.
