I know this is Grey Desire’s province (sorry, Paul! <!– s:wink: –><!– s:wink: –> ) and I did try to find the original thread (Corm it would be nice to have a Search facility?!) but I couldn’t, so here goes.
I know GD has already pencilled in Black Jacari for that role but I have two other contenders. Latin Scholar, who was unplaced in the 5.20 at Salisbury yesterday, looks to have the size and build for the game and appears to get 10f, on the flat, and I see that Kingy has Potemkin, placed in an 11f. handicap at Lingfield (Turf) last time, entered for the juvenile novice at Market Rasen tomorrow.

There is a search facility btw and the previous notes on Black Jacari appear in the Cheltenham 2009 thread. As far as I’m aware, there has always been a search facility, although it used to be quite cumbersome.
June 26, 2008 at 11:20 #170169Oops , thanks Rory, sorry Corm!

June 26, 2008 at 14:41 #170214Captain Webb would be a good one if he were to be sold.
Inspector Clouseau possibly more realistic though.

June 26, 2008 at 15:41 #170228Cant see Princess Haya letting him go fists, he was an impressive looking animal, and appears suited to gd-fm. Think he’ll probably be out in dubai somewhere when the jumps are going on.
Its a bit early to say who could be a triumph horse as yet as we dont know who will be sold to who.
O’briens horse Hebridean could be good if JP Mcmanus bought him.
June 26, 2008 at 18:46 #170243New Approach could be a good thing if he were to have his Jacobs cut off.
Alan King had a runner at Salisbury in the Bibury Cup and he is a gelding so we know where his future will be, Wincanton just up the road.
June 26, 2008 at 19:25 #170249Neil, It’s A Date is the horse you are referring to, no reason why he can’t make the grade at hurdling, he won over 10f. at Newbury earlier this year.
He didn’t show a great deal at Salisbury yesterday, but it is quite likely that the ground didn’t suit.

June 28, 2008 at 16:25 #170572Another O’Brien horse that I would like to see perhaps as a potential Triumph horse is The Bogberry he looks like a hurdles type and I think someone like Noel Meade or Edward O’Grady could do a good job with him. Another 3 y.o. that I like to see hurdling is a horse called Hasty Retreat which is trained by Ed Dunlop and owned my Susan Roy. Its about time Paul and Susan Roy had a horse running over jumps in thier colours and Hasty Retreat could do alright in a Triumph Hurdle. Does anyone think we might see a classy St Leger type flat horse going hurdling next winter maybe another Celestial Halo or Ashkazar perhaps?

Hebridean has just moved from AOB’s to the Nicholls Stable. I think last season on the flat he looked like a Triumph contender in the making, and think Nicholls could refine him a bit, but bookmakers quotes of 16s and 20s are daylight robbery, was hoping for 33s. The swines…

It could be argued that Hebridean would have more chance if he stayed with O’Brien, after all Aidan has trained 3 Champion Hurdle winners, a Sun Alliance winner. But obviously having given up training jumpers it won’t happen. I still think of Nicholls as pimarily a Chase trainer – maybe unfairly.

I agree I would rather have King training my hurdlers or indeed AP hiimself. Nicholls is acutely aware of that as well hence his recent adoption of a King like policy of buying decent ex flat horses.
November 14, 2008 at 18:14 #189717I think Nicholls training performance with Celestial Halo last season was something else, the way he sent him out in the triumph to go from the front and just run everything into submission was brilliant, Franchoek had shown a similar style of running all season and even he was faqding at the end.
Celestial Halo was decent on the flat but his triumph performance would have looked beyond him when with barry hills. I think with the right horse Nicholls is as good as anyone at the hurdling game.
Couldnt believe when looked earlier to see that Stan James and Betdirct have Hebridean at 14-1 for the Champion Hurdle, even shorter than his stable mate, who won last years triumph, and even shorter than he is in the Triumph market. The horse hasnt even jumped a fence yet.
