… that Maiden races only pay Each-Way on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places after 16 runners. Just sayin’
January 6, 2025 at 16:57 #1717638Ghost, that rule is for all non handicaps, but a few onsite places do add extra places at lesser odds. So in my view its best to take SP for those.
January 6, 2025 at 20:16 #1717650Most runners in maidens have very few if any starts / form to their name. Most will be open to improvement and some large amounts of improvement. It is extremely difficult to get an accurate assessment of each horse’s chance. Therefore every bookmaker is going to work to a greater over-round in maiden races than in every other type of flat race. If they then had to offer 4 places it increases the difficulty still further. ie If paying 4 places their over-round would need to be astronomical because of the risk factor. So they don’t offer it.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 6, 2025 at 21:20 #1717654But surely, it’s a double-edged sword for both bookmaker and punter … in almost equal measure. To me, betting EW in a maiden holds the same risks as trying to find a placed horse in a handicap.
“It is extremely difficult to get an accurate assessment of each horse’s chance. Therefore every bookmaker is going to work to a greater over-round in maiden races than in every other type of flat race.”
The same case can be said about the punter choosing the selection. If anything, the punter is worse off.
Strange one!January 6, 2025 at 22:36 #1717657When horses have very little form then the advantage is with those in the know, GORV… Something could improve massively and bookmakers can’t be that sure about who that / those horse/s will bet. Therefore they have to reduce the risk of being hit by those in the know.
Yes, most punters are in the same situation as bookmakers, which is why – unless you are in the know – it is imo best to stay well clear of maidens. The normal punter is up against a greater over-round, worse each way terms and rival punters who know more than we do.
I used to bet in some, by looking at the top 2 timeform rated (that had run before) and judging that against the Timeform Race Winning (TRW) figures. (The rating the winners of the last 5 runnings of the the race ran to). But even then the ability of the winner could vary enormously, so I stopped betting on them.
Paddock watchers can also have a big advantage in maidens and I didn’t know enough about conformation. Even though I knew a bit about Shiny / dull coats, could pick out a burly horse, knew about temperamental things to look out for, and had more idea than most about the “equine question mark”.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 7, 2025 at 10:22 #1717665bet365 offer extra places on these races- sometimes up to 10 places but you are obviously taking reduced odds so only really worth it if you fancy one to get in the first 5 or 6 at very big prices.
The without the favourite market is also worth a look at. You get 5 places if the first 2 in the market get placed and can get paid as a winner if yours finishes 3rd behind the market principles.
That is of course until Denise shuts you down but if you have access its worth a look if you really fancy one in a maiden at long odds
January 7, 2025 at 11:26 #1717669In a lot of these markets you describe, Kendicate; isn’t the over-round figure always massive? So if betting “each way” you’re still betting half the bet (the “win” part) at incredibly short odds… And once the over-round is reduced the place bet is rarely a value / good bet anyway; whatever the number of places getting paid out.

Where is this mythical beast, the 16+ runner maiden taking place? Not this side of the Irish Sea often enough to be a cause for concern. On the rare occasion that more than 16 are declared for such a race, it’s usually divided to give the racecourse two lots of media rights payments.
January 10, 2025 at 08:40 #1717757Can’t disagree that the over round must be big- hence you really need to fancy one or have the inside track to make it worth it.
