For all of us, of a certain age, who saw him ride – after suffering a recent stroke, the passing of 92-year old Scobie Breasley was announced today.

In support of the above Wikipeadia entry that "he was renowned for his exquisite balance in the saddle, for refusing to race wide, and for his sparing use of the whip, preferring to use hands and heels."
My late father swears that during the business end of one particular race at Chester he witnessed a Scobie Breasley runner get boxed in coming round the Castle Turn. Forcing Scobie to temporary ride with his left leg out of the iron and cocked over the inside running rail – and no, he didn’t go on to win the race. It was later reported by unsaddling enclosure witnesses that evidence of fresh white-wash stains were clearly visible down his left riding boot.

December 21, 2006 at 17:42 #34132A brilliant rider, very quiet, and a master tactician – in that respect he was probably the equal of Lester.
I remember him winning a Queen’s Prize at Kempton in the early 60s (Eborneezer perhaps?), creeping up to take the lead by about a head with 25 yards to go then easing off to win by a shorty.
December 21, 2006 at 19:21 #34133A great jockey and a master at delivering a horse in the last furlong. He was certainly a great favourite of mine and I reckon he was worth 5 or 6lbs against ordinary jockeys. He was on a par with the very best of those riding in the 50’s and 60’s. Thanks for the memories, Scobie.
December 21, 2006 at 21:51 #34134Agree he was a great artist often leaving it very late -can never forget his late swoop to win the derby on Santa Claus – believe connections were sweating a bit up to the winning post !!

So much so that they sacked him for his efforts!
December 21, 2006 at 23:37 #34136He was before my time but I met him at Epsom on a couple of occasions in his later years and he was a perfect gentleman.
RIP
