There was a thread about TNO started after his Warwick victory. I took some stick there for saying I thought he’d win at least one Gold Cup, probably more. That deadly turn of foot he has would make me think again about him staying the GC trip, but in time he might do.
I’ve no doubt he’ll make a top ‘chaser, and I think he’ll be unbeaten for some time. He’ll win the 2014 Champion Hurdle if he lines up fit and well.
I don’t think he has the scope to be a top class chaser. Looks a hurdler through and through to me.
And you must surely understand why that original comment was met with some criticism, although that often masquerades as derision.
I’m looking forward to watching Milarrow later !
He’s certainly not the classical ‘chaser in looks and scope but a superb engine (someone mentioned Bobs Worth) makes up for an awful lot. My doubt now about the Gold Cup, as mentioned, is that horses with such a deadly turn of foot at the GC trip are rare. And I was slightly disappointed that he couldn’t outstay Zarkandar – huge performance though that was.
But he still has some maturing to do. His hurdling is improving race by race (touch wood) he was clumsy at times in his early races.
Well he’s an interesting horse in that respect because he’s bred to stay, although several King’s Theatre’s have a turn of foot over 2 to 2 1/2 miles.
October 22, 2013 at 17:49 #455835Lovely horse, very powerfully built and will be tough to beat wherever he turns up. MTOY is a different type altogether, I think he’ll make the better chaser of the two, but I’m not sure he has the raw speed over hurdles that TNO has. Could be (or maybe already is) a very strong division this season.
December 15, 2013 at 13:56 #461886When is
The New One
going to earn a fast speed figure?
Yesterday he looked impressive when beating
Zarkandar
by 6 lengths, but the speed figure I had for him was
113
which was the exactly same figure I gave him at the Cheltenham festival, which was very disappointing to say the least, considering I have a speed figure of
154
for
My Tent Or Yours
.
To put the race time into perspective, just look at the time the winner of the first
Ballyglasheen
achieved, he is rated
47lbs
inferior to
The New One
yet he ran only
0.18s
slower carrying
5lbs
less.
The official going yesterday at
Cheltenham
was given out as good, I had the going on the slow side of good at
-0.24s/f
.
My par for a grade 1 hurdle race is
154
so
The New One
has yet to prove to me he is up to winning the Champion hurdle, no doubt he will prove me wrong in time
December 26, 2013 at 17:26 #463019What a disappointment the Christmas hurdle was on the clock, and the long awaited clash between champion hurdle fancies
The New One
and
My Tent Or Yours

The going was not as bad as the jockeys stated, I had the going at
Kempton
at
-0.50s/f
which is just a shade under soft going

The speed figures returned were nothing special…
My Tent Or Yours (IRE) 11/8
114
The New One (IRE) 5/6F
114
Sametegal (FR) 12/1
88
Duke Of Navan (IRE) 50/1
83
Grumeti 16/1
76
Chapel House 100/1
22
On this performance, none of these horses will finish in front of
Willie Mullins
charge
Un De Sceaux
if they ever meet, who earned a speed figure of
125
at
Thurles
without even trying

Obviously your post is to be taken with a pinch of salt blues but the fact there was no proper pace-setter in the race and Sam T-D said himself he had to make TNO do a lot of the work at front which isn’t what he wanted is what made it a slow pace.
Though I’m sure you knew that so not sure why I’m even replying haha, Boxing day boredom I guess
December 26, 2013 at 19:30 #463043Seems to me that some younger jockeys spend too much time thinking about Anthony and not about their own horse. They end up taking their mind off the task at hand.Never see Ruby looking back to find out where wee Anthony is.
December 26, 2013 at 22:19 #463062Ruby has years of experience behind him, and the accompanying confidence. STD is young and learning, so his nerves were understandable….. frustrating nevertheless.
December 27, 2013 at 00:33 #463068The difference today was simply down to the jockey.
McCoy will always outride STD, whether tactically, or absolutely, in a finish.
Both are smashing animals, but I don’t see The New One as a better chaser in the making either.
I was remiss in not seeing this post earlier, as the opening post compares The New One to Night Nurse.
Now , I accept that I may be perceived to be a particularly sad individual, but I went everywhere possible to see the apple of my eye, Night Nurse, as a teenager. The Easterby’s were also gracious in allowing me to visit him.
The comparison is simply ridiculous.
Night Nurse was simply the best, or one of the best, ever.
He championed the division when it was full of great horses. Simply compare those greats (and there were a number unlucky enough to be around at the same time), to the betting for the current champion hurdle.December 28, 2013 at 14:30 #463262Anyone notice AP talking to STD after the race with his hand over his mouth ?
Love to know what he said. Maybe " that last flight cost you the race " ?
December 30, 2013 at 19:28 #463532Our Connor’s jockey is retained by the owner.
