If lucky enough to own The New One, would any amount of money tempt you to sell?
January 21, 2013 at 14:47 #427057I wouldn’t sell. He will win a Gold Cup, maybe two or three.

Talking in such definitives is foolish, and suggests one hasn’t learn from the inevitable failings of past hype.
He’s 2 years away from even potentially contesting a Gold Cup. Winning one is most unlikely, winning multiple gold cups ….
An exciting novice hurdler he is. A likely multiple Gold Cup winner? He is not.
Given my age and situation, i’d sell in a heartbeat for the correct price.

Ahh, you are right my friend, I should have been more circumspect. Having given it careful thought . . .
If he stays sound, he will win at least one Gold Cup.
As for hype, it’s not for me. I trust my own judgement; after he won at Cheltenham I tweeted that I believed he’d win at the Festival. His Warwick Grade 2 success was one of the most impressive performances I’ve watched for a very long time. The horse is the most exciting prospect I’ve seen since the young Denman.
January 21, 2013 at 18:42 #427071Jezki has just been sold for £500,000 or close to it. I’d want £600,000 as i think TNO has more scope.
Highflyer bought him for £25,000.My concern for Cheltenham would be that he’s been in training for a time and may have been overfaced this season but he’s surely a Neptune horse, not a Supreme.

Everybody is influenced and shaped by hype in some way, whether you care to admit it or not.
You’re denouncing a 3 times hurdle raced novice a definitive future Gold Cup winner. However promising and exciting the horse is, winning a Grade 2 Warwick Novice Hurdle is far removed from contesting, let alone winning, a Cheltenham Gold Cup. I can entertain the idea that in the future he is a plausible Gold Cup protagonist, but no more at this point.

I think this is what is termed swallowing the bait – twice.

Gee Whizz, only just noticed this thread,I dont know what his owners paid for
The New One
but if it was £100k I’d sell him now for £300k. As fine a hurdling prospect he looks and he is the one to beat in the ‘Neptune’ this horse has No scope whatsoever to make it as a chaser, some are already saying he’s the new
Imperial Commander
?? He’s about half the bloody size of that horse for starters and like I say has No scope to develop on his diminuative frame so as for winning one Gold cup,not a chance, maybe 2 or 3??? He’s a willing head and an athletic build for hurdling but come crunch time and put a fence in front of him we’ll see a different story……….He could be an ‘Inglis Drever’ though! I’m sure it was one of Nigels that pipped him in a ‘Neptune’ when red hot fav too mind!
January 23, 2013 at 15:58 #427230He has a terrific engine, allied to a great attitude. Very good prospect.
I see him more as a future World Hurdle winner rather than a Gold Cup winner.

January 23, 2013 at 16:41 #427241I am a big Puffin Billy fan and notice the two of them are entered in the Neptune Hurdle on Saturday – should be a cracker if they do both run.
On the grounds that I think Puffin Billy is the classier of the two and is capable of defeating TNO I would be inclined to sell now rather than wait and become bitterly disappointed (just like the owners of Cue Card and Dunguib did).
NTD did query the strength of the opposition after the Warwick race and to be honest horses go off at 1/2 and 2/7 for a reason. Visually he was mightily impressive but how strong is the form?
The race to focus on is his Cheltenham victory in October which has hardly been franked by Village Vic. He was made to work that day and there is enough evidence there to suggest he is beatable and the less exposed Puffin Billy could have his measure should they both line up on Saturday.
I remember a few years back a certain W P Mullins telling us that Florida Pearl could win at least three gold cups and become more famous that Arkle. I tend to agree that one needs to apply caution when making grand predictions about the future exploits of horses who are only in their second seasons.

Inclined to sell now for how much?

Well its all relative and I don’t know the wealth of the owners, however given that Cue Card and Dunguib would curretnly fetch considerably lower that £200k (but were once valued at at least that amount) I would be inclined to accept £200k for him, however if Mr McManus and his team were to offer considerably more then I would be stupid not to accept!
Maybe Mrs S Such is absolutely minted so the dream of winning a Gold cup one day outweighs £200 big ones, but personally I would take the money and run.

Connections of Puffin Billy are sidestepping Saturday to find the horse an easier race. That would be receiving weight from The New One as well. Enough said.

Levels, my bad
January 25, 2013 at 01:37 #427370Oliver Sherwood stated that Puffin Billy was his best horse since Large Action but given his modest record since then it might not take much doing. If they met I would expect The New One to go off a warm favourite and I reckon he would gallop Puffin Billy into the ground. I wouldn’t back any horse to win multiple Gold Cups given the normal "One and your done" profile of the race when you exclude Best Mate over my years of watching the race. I’d hang onto The New One for now.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
January 25, 2013 at 18:50 #427428Find out tomorrow what he is worth. Cracking race in prospect.
Will have to go some to beat Coneygree and you cannot rule out At Fishers Cross or Whisper.
This race is probably better that what it would be in March with a couple of Irish challengers.
This is what jump racing is about.
Can’t waitJanuary 25, 2013 at 20:43 #427457Really looking forward to the race tomorrow – hes a proper machine and cony is one on my shortlist as well – be great to see how they run @ chelt. – a real mouthwatering NH race
Dont know what the weather will be like tom but in chelt now its a bit milder so maybe just above freezing but the wind is strong and have had some really cold rain tonight. You cant stand in the wind for more than a few seconds as it is. We wont have frost cos of the wind but the rain so far isnt too hard but really really cold.
