Being a newcomer to the Forum I have no idea if this topic has been under discussion previously but deep breath, here I go. The Scoop 6 has been going a few years now and the TOTE’s original criteria was to create a bet which could rival the lottery ! Now that it’s up for sale , and for the benefit of the incoming owners I would like to ask what the jackasses at the Tote think they are doing. Firstly this is only a bet for syndicates, or those individuals who bet on the basis of family names, colours, lucky numbers etc. I have never taken part in this bet simply because syndicates mostly win it, and for the most intelligent form student it would need combination bets amounting to hundreds of bets (if not thousands) at £2 a go. Never in my wildest dreams could I possibly select 6 winners but I suppose a few optimists might lay out £20 or so in 5p combinations.
But the Tote doesn’t want this because I wrote to them many years ago pointing out the loss of revenue in excluding the smaller punter. This leads me to my real question….if the Tote runs pool bets does it stray from this concept,or indeed fairness, why does it manipulate pool bets by excluding many potential punters ! Is this legal let alone sensible, and does it not have a statutory duty to generate funding for the industry ? You can not do this by excluding punters. I don’t really care personally but it doesn’t seem logical to me.

I notice that there have been plenty of views but no replies to my post (maybe suggesting that the Scoop 6 is already a non-event for sensible punters?). However I may have been too elaborate in my original post and I raise the point again by asking if more people would be interested if 5p or 10p permutation units were available.
I would certainly be happy with a 5p share of £100k let alone a million ! Also does the Tote have a legal right to manipulate the bet to artificially create a massive pool for the big syndicates to the exclusion of ordinary punters, and incidentally using the pool for its own self publicity ? It is also mimimising its own pool by excluding the 5p punter who would be staking total Scoop6 investments of £10 and upwards as opposed to £2 !

It is precisely because this is an expensive bet to do big perms in that makes it hard to win and ensures the pools grow quickly. I love it but only play 5-6 times a year when there’s a big pool and I think we can get the odds of winning down to two figures. My syndicate have yet to win it but have hit the bar numerous times and thanks to both place dividends and laying our selections in the final leg when we get that far it hasn’t cost us much at all- I haven’t asked the lads for fresh funds yet this year. I am certain we will win it eventually: it’s one of my biggest betting ambitions to join Mounty in that hallowed position (mind you, he’d never have done it without that shrewdie Peter Naughton’s massive input)

My one bugbear with the Tote is that they make it artificially hard by sticking in bogus races not originally due to be televised- I think that’s a bit unfair. I have no problem with the basic structure of the bet though.

As far as I aware there is also a discount of up to 20p a line for the large players – if the bet is placed directly with the Tote.

Perhaps Carvs or someone can confirm the discounts available.

I used to get 10% with Bet 365, then with Blue Square but both stopped offering rebates. I’ve never heard of the Tote offering rebates. Apparently Betfair give 10% to the big players but I presume we’re neither big enough nor frequent enoough players to be offered that. If anyone knows any different I’d be grateful- we normally stake anything from 2k to 5k.

Thanks Carvs, yes I may be mistaken on the detail of placing the bet with the Tote, and it maybe just the books passing on (some of) their rebate….

Thanks Carvs and Pompete but I’m not into big stakes at impossible odds and you both seem to be operating at a higher level than the humble betting shop punter who is nevertheless vital to the Levy.As I have said my main concern is that it seems to be illegal to me to operate a pool bet, exclude potential customers, and manipulate a pool to achieve maximum publicity.Surely out there there must be a few legal experts who enjoy a punt and could offer a view.
