if we want to find a true stamina test then I can’t see why those who enjoyed last weeks Eider chase wont support races up to 6 miles and racecourses to water heavily to get bottomless ground.

In the racing stables down at Piddletrenthide, someone’s just slapped a saddle back on Kittenkat at the mere suggestion. Your time is finally nigh, old girl. 8)

Agreed, Anthony. There are four or five posters on here who really should pack it in. Tonight. They’ve not necessarily posted on this thread either. They have an agenda and they are here for a reason.

I wasn’t thinking specifically of this forum (although not excluding it either)

I think I’ve mentioned this before but I see parallels between the future of horse racing & the future of my ‘other sport’ of cricket.

In both sports; progress, criticism & suggestion are taken to extremes. ALL four mile races are bad, not just this one race; ALL all weather racing is dross solely for bookies benefit; ONE meeting is being moved from Newmarket to Ascot & it’s a slippery slope to the death of HQ etc etc etc.

Hahaha! What a mare. Are they breeding from her? I assume they’re having to use the fastest 5f stallion they can afford to avoid producing something that will literally stay all day…

I thought we already races over 6 miles on the cross country course at Cheltenham.

Or is it just the ‘impression’ they give of going on for ever and ever?

Max; I said the Eider was ‘not’ another nail in the coffin, for me. For a day or so I’d been afraid to voice what I felt…I’d watched a race a few weeks ago where a few horses were pulled up before the last fence and praised the jockeys for doing so, but, for some reason, did not feel the same way about this one. All I could think was what an amazing performance by Companero; I’ve backed him before, only for him to be pulled out of races, because he needed soft ground. He was so brave, and yet his achievement will just be forgotten, other than villifying everyone and everything surrounding the race. This was his race, his moment, and he deserves to go down in the annals of horse racing as a hero, like Mandarin and Fred Winter etc etc [ok I’m exagerrating a bit here]. I’ve been in despair over the losses this season, starting with Me Voici, but NH racing is all about guts and bravery, and thats what I saw on Saturday. Even Morgan B being ridden for third; look at McCoy and Ruby in the National a few years ago..no outcry about that at the time. However, in general I do agree with not remounting a fallen horse; my hero, Fulke Walwyn never allowed his jockeys to do so and that was way back. [ps do realise that Morgan B wasn’t remounted]

Hear, hear! It’s up to us to make sure that doesn’t happen. And the best way to do that is to face down the Animal Rights Inquisition and fellow travellers, who want us to feel guilty and bad about the horse, the race, and the sport we love. Do not lose heart.

    Fine post Moehat

Companero’s performance along with that of the other finishers won’t be forgotten by me, rest assured

Lest we forget: horses can refuse to jump a fence if they feel like it…

    …they didn’t

    gallant sport, gallant horses

Must admit I given up on this posting as I couldn’t believe the number of bleeding heart liberalists there were. So it’s good to see more than one person who loves this sport and I definately won’t lose heart

As I’ve mentioned, it isn’t the Animal Rights people you need to worry about. Racing will be destroyed from the inside.

By ‘this sport’ I take it you’re talking about jumps racing only?
