A poor ride from a poor jockey.
February 20, 2008 at 19:17 #145119Yes it is amazing he gives him so many rides
February 20, 2008 at 20:51 #145151I actually think he’s a better jockey than most people give him credit for. He’s still only young and bound to make mistakes like everyone else. Being champion apprentice last year means he rode more winners than the likes of William Buick, who most people seem to hold in higher regard, and who probably had better rides overall.

Fairley was champion apprentice in great part because he picked up so many rides for Johnston because of the split with Kevin Darley and the injury to Joe Fanning. Being apprenticed to Mark Johnston is going to help you pick up far more rides and in turn more winners than being apprenticed to Andrew Balding ever will. Buick picked up far better outside rides (Hills and Stoute used him on low-weights in big handicaps), but the reason for that is pretty obvious in my opinion – because he’s a better rider.

A brilliant trainer and a great man to have on your side.I will take a wild guess that all his short priced horses that got beat recently on the A/W were at Lingfield. The reason for that is that front running and Lingfield go together like chalk and cheese. Anyone backing a short Mark Johnston horse at Lingfield and then getting burnt only has themseleves to blame.
Top notch trainer who will always give you a run for your money.
February 20, 2008 at 23:11 #145179Just to add some balance to today’s Lingfield race, his saddle did slip.
