Hearing the recent story of an absconding bookie at Listowel reminded me of this character who turned up at Epsom on Derby Day in 1997 and laid the nuts off (the appropriately named) Entrepreneur at fancy prices before doing a runner.

A very clear photo of him was circulated soon after but I am not sure if he was ever apprehended.

Anybody know? Anybody claim to be him?

"….It might pay to study the name on the betting tickets he [was] handing out. The conman at Epsom on Saturday gave his name as John Batten, but the name on his tickets was … Lucan."

Clever money is on him languishing at the bottom of the Thames in a pair of concrete wellingtons.

    Paul Cicero:

Know the guy I mean? His name was Batten. His people are driving everyone crazy looking for him.

    Henry Hill:

Nobody knows what happened. He set up his joint that afternoon and then just disappeared.
