Home Forums Horse Racing The Horserace Bettors Forum Would Like Your Opinions

Would you be happy to forego some or all of your bonuses etc in return for keeping your accounts open and with the ability to bet at a reasonable level?

With account restrictions and closures more and more in the news lately we would like your opinions on whether you are happy with the status quo - or would you prefer to give up BOG etc in return for keeping your accounts open for longer?

  • I am happy as things are, restrictions and account closures don't bother me
  • I would be willing if necessary to give up some or all concessions if it meant I was not restricted or closed

MV, Betfair no longer take multiples, a serious deficiency for the ‘casual’ punter. There’s also the ‘tax’ element.

As to the tote, there’s no reason that a strong tote could not offer multiples; it’s just a software issue. Remember the tote double, the tote treble? There’s no reason either – especially with the equivalent of a tote monopoly (therefore huge liquidity) that ‘a price’ could not be taken. If I were at the tote these days, I’d be pushing 50% of marketing budget at the ‘no restrictions, ever’ target, and the other 50 at ‘always beats SP’.

On agreeing an Aussie type model, legislation would be ideal, but not necessary. All it takes is one big company to set up such a structure and the rest will follow.

Some interesting replies already that we are taking note of (please keep them coming). Just to be clear, unlimited bets at any price were never a target, but I can assure you that this morning I tried to get a HUGE £2 on a 16/1 chance and got knocked back to 91p by Bet365 – does anyone really think that is acceptable? I am hardly arbing with those stakes (which is often their answer to such restrictions), we would simply like all punters to be able to get a bet on – even if its a tenner. I accept the trade off may be higher percentages for the bookmakers, but does it really matter what the overround is if people cannot get a bet on? They offer a price – I take it (or not if I think it is poor value), it’s as simple as that – why should punters be punished for taking the best prices available? In addition, we are told its only 3% of accounts closed or restricted, but with no evidence to back that up – and from the e-mails and tweets we get at the HBF it seems a major case of concern. Suffice to say 13 million allegedly bet on the Grand National each year – so even 3% equates to 390,000 restricted accounts -food for thought at least?

Absolutely crazy. What good reason does Bet 365 have for refusing that bet?

My guess is the reason is Sean makes his betting pay.

Nothing wrong with that but restrictions are a way of closing punters down without closing punters down.

I’ve been restricted to only backing horses to win (that’s win, not stake) a tenner – or even a fiver – with them overnight and £20 the morning of the race.

And BOG and any other concessions are long gone.

It annoys me too, but there is nothing illegal about it, they all do it and it would require a change in the law to alter this scenario.

No big firm will take the lead and do it, because they all believe it would reduce profits to allow punters who might know what they’re doing the change to win more meaningful sums.

It’s also about not wanting to get caught laying a “rick” in size – near Post time as the market settles down punters can usually get (a bit) more on.

Ian you seem quite content with the “that’s how it is and there’s nothing that can be done about it?”

The HBF are actively trying to get something done about the state of things and they should be applauded. Your mindset of accepting the moratorium bookies are increasingly using/getting away with isn’t helping anyone!

Rarely going the races, watching with the mute button on. It’s all falling into place now! I’m going to call you Ostrich from now on, not chezza :yahoo:

45 years of following the game, seeing the same arguments periodically recycled and repackaged, having worked both sides of the fence, and knowing what the Law is, tends to do that to you, sir.
