The comprehensive list of courses which have increased prizemoney this month so far is now:
Thirsk
Wolverhampton
Folkestone
Southwell
Beverley
Newbury
Haydock
Doncaster
Leicester
Windsor
Bath
Sandown
Musselburgh
Warwick
Lingfield
Newmarket
FontwellAdd to that list, Ffos Las which has added a grand to a race on the 25th.
Southwell has added a total of £1,750 spread over three races on the 28th.
Doncaster has put its hand in its pocket for its meeting on the 30th to the tune of £5,100. Windsor has added £300 to a couple of its races on 2nd May.
April 26, 2011 at 16:54 #352269Whereas York have reduced the prize money for two 1m 4f races on Sat May 21st by £1,500 each.
Of course, the decreases aren’t being publicised by the racecourse, nor are they mentioned on the racing admin website.
But as I was planning a possible program for an 80 rated 12F horse, I had made notes about all the possible races, including the prize money. Three weeks ago, these were ten grand races.
The horse in question is entered for one of the Windsor races that has been boosted by £300 next Monday – but to be honest, that isn’t going to make a pennorth of difference to the decision on whether he runs, which will be down to the ground. But he is now less likely to be trekking up to York on May 21st!

It’s annoying if they aren’t publicising the decreases in prizemoney – I hadn’t appreciated that.
I was expecting Carter to be meeting up with Langley in the last race of the Chester May meeting followed by a rematch on 11th May at York

April 28, 2011 at 11:10 #352515Four more £500 increases from Southwell (4th & 10th May) and a £1,500 increase for the 4.25 at Newmarket on 1st May.
April 28, 2011 at 18:35 #352575Beverley have pushed the boat out for a race on 25th May increasing prizemoney from £3,500 to £5,500.
April 29, 2011 at 14:39 #352709Steeps you claim;
47% of the Betting Industy’s profit last year came from FOTBs
Have you got a source for this, please.
I think it was in the January or February edition of Betting Business, the monthly industry mag. – And I should, of course have said FOBT and not FOTB
Also when you say
Racing’s share of Betting has fallen from the days of Extel (circa 20-25 years ago) from 80% to 50%
What are the total figures (size of total betting market say 1985 and 2011) you are taking those %’s from?
I don’t know offhand (it was above 80% and is now below 50%) – I could find out with some research but it wouldn’t alter the point of the market-share loss. No matter how much the market has grown, a progressive loss of share will kill your business in the end.
Thanks Steeps
I find the FOBT figures amazing and if true (and I’m not doubting your figures) mind blowing…..
I am a little a bit unsure about the market size and market share as from everything I’ve seem Horse Racing is still very important to the High Street bookies however much they try and convince us otherwise….
May 3, 2011 at 10:33 #353456Fakenham is the latest course to be hit as a result of running a card full of below tariff races. Just 29 runners contest a six race card. The clerk of the course has shown his disappointment on the BHA going page saying how disappointed they are by the poor show considering their efforts to produce safe ground seemingly oblivious to the real reason for the poor turnout.
May 3, 2011 at 11:14 #353468Tuffers,
What makes you believe that Fakenham’s races are below tarrif?
Because, so far as I can tell, they are all above tariff, even the Class 3 novice races, which they could easily have changed to Class 4 and saved themselves money.
For example, the tariff for a Class 3 novice chase staged Monday to Thursday is £8,700 according to the Horsemens Group website, and Fakenham are offering £8,800.
Even the selling hurdle is OK – tariff for a Class 5 hurdle is £2,600, they offer £3,000.

Apologies, I was looking at the prizemoney to the winner rather than the total race value.

In that case, are the small field sizes down to a simple lack of horses to go round?
May 3, 2011 at 12:32 #353488In view of my gaffe earlier it is probably timely that this month’s Owner & Breeder has just dropped onto my mat and one of the articles made me aware of a daily update that shows the days races and whether they are above or below tariff. Here’s the link:

May 4, 2011 at 09:06 #353656Having checked carefully
it looks as though the two reoffered races at Wincanton tomorrow (3 decs each) are down to low prizemoney as both are below tariff (one by £1,900). All but one of the races is below tariff and just 30 horses are declared for the meeting.Edit:
Just as an aside, you can see on the BHA admin site the names of the 3 provisionally declared runners for those two reoffered races. I thought that when a race was reoffered you didn’t get to find out the identity of the other declared runners until the deadline for the reoffered race had expired?
May 4, 2011 at 19:46 #353769The following racecourses have downgraded upcoming races presumably as an alternative to increasing prizemoney to meet the tariff (number of races downgraded in brackets)
Brighton (1)
Uttoxeter (1)
Haydock (2)
Sandown (3)
Southwell (7)Southwell has downgraded every race on the card on 17th May.
May 13, 2011 at 16:01 #355269The RP are supposed to be flagging up sub-tariff races with effect from today. I can’t see anything on the website – is it just being done in the paper?
May 13, 2011 at 16:06 #355270They’ve started listing the tariff next to the race conditions/prize money in the racecards in the paper.

getting off his declared mount in the tariff-low Scope Handicap at Newbury today looked like a massive own goal, from many points of view.
Why agree to ride the horse in the first place? Getting off it angered a lot of people, punters not least.
Why choose a race run to publicise such a genuinely worthwhile organisation as Scope – the hugely important charity for children and adults disabled by cerebral palsy?
It simply looks like a piece of Millionaire’s Short-termism.
May 13, 2011 at 18:50 #355294Southwell has downgraded every race on the card on 17th May.
How is that possible? Is it an all Banded card now?
For some reason, on hearing this news, I was reminded of the time Spinal Tap supported the Puppet Show.
