October 30, 2014 at 10:06 #493775Favourite race of the year, especially from a betting perspective and two immediate atand-outs are Le Bec and Man Clouds.
50s with Stans for the Gold Cup. Get on them for both.
October 30, 2014 at 15:35 #493816I’m surprised to see Djakadam as low as 7/1 favourite for this race as I thought the Paddy Power would be a better option distance wise.
I believe they are going to aim him at the King George and I think you need a horse with a bit of pace for that one and for me it made more sense to be stepping up in trip, rather than down, come Boxing Day.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I suppose they want to find out if he’s potentially a Gold Cup horse. I haven’t heard the King George mentioned for him but if he goes close in the Hennessy it will be under consideration along with the Lexus.
Although he has never ran beyond 2m 5f, he was declared to run over 3m at Punchestown but was a non runner on the day. If he’s as good as they seem to think he is, then 10/1 shall look pretty big imo.
October 30, 2014 at 21:42 #493846I read somewhere that Djakadam would start off in the Hennessey and then have a crack at the King George. He is as big as 40/1 for the latter race, so that seems ambitious at this stage.
I have him in my ten to follow, as he seemed to have quotes for a shed load of races and I feel they will find his level and aim him accordingly thereafter.
I felt he was still in the mix when falling in the JLT at the Festival and he has time on his side.
The Hennessey will always stick in my mind for the year I had Jodami at 33/1 for the Gold Cup. He went off a warm favourite for the Hennessey off just 10st 3lb and got stuffed by Sibton Abbey at 40/1. I don’t think I slept right for a week after that and the ante-post tickets were almost run through the paper shredder.
Rocky Creek is a horse I could see running well in the Hennessey. He was initially deemed disappointing when beaten by The Giant Bolster in The Argento but the ground was heavy that day and it later transpired he was trying to concede 5lbs to the horse who would finish 3rd in the Gold Cup on his next start.
Rocky Creek ran really well in the Grand National before tiring in the closing stages and he was second behind Triolo D’alene in last year’s Hennessey.
Plenty to like and 14/1 seems fair enough to me as an each-way prospect.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
November 1, 2014 at 16:27 #494146A good seasonal debut from
Rocky Creek
today and I would recommend taking the remaining 14/1 with Paddy Power for the Hennessey, after finishing in front of Boston Bob and First Lieutenant today in Ireland off level weights.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
November 1, 2014 at 17:44 #494162What a Warrior will be popular now, though he had a hard race today.
November 2, 2014 at 02:20 #494241Le Bec retired after sustaining a very serious injury today. Rotten luck for the owner and trainer who have already had two decent prospects killed on the course this season.
It never rains etc…
November 2, 2014 at 21:29 #494362What a Warrior will be popular now, though he had a hard race today.
Prices vary wildly for What A Warrior. As low as 14/1 with Ladbrokes and as big as 33/1 with Boylesports.
I feel he’ll probably have a lot more on his plate in the Hennessey but 33/1 looks a huge price in a handicap for a horse who has just won a race.
There will be worse value than double carpet on a seven time winner but the ground would scupper him if it’s on the soft side. His form on the mud is noticeably weak.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
November 7, 2014 at 15:22 #494705Had a fiver on Mullaghanoe River at 70s on Betfair. Not sure if he goes here but he’s a well handicapped horse and the trip should suit.
November 7, 2014 at 18:41 #494711Lots of positives surround Fingal Bay. His Pertemps form has been franked to say the very least! And Hobbs is really keen on his chances.
At a price, i am really taken by Theatre Guide. Tizzard says he’s a better horse than last year and he ran a screamer of a prep at Kempton the other day.
Those two against the field for me…
November 15, 2014 at 14:05 #495294Smad Place
at 10/1 for me,RSA form always solid in the following seasons Hennessey and
Sam winner
battling through the cheltenham mud today franks that form lovely…I just hope Alan King doesn’t change his mind at the last minute again and state he was never going to run!!
November 21, 2014 at 11:33 #495912Does anyone else think Djakadam is appalling value at as low as 9/2 for the Hennessey?
He’s in my ten to follow and he’s a young horse with promise but he lacks experience of this type of contest. He receives a stone from my early pick Rocky Creek but sometimes being potentially well handicapped doesn’t prove enough in itself.
Just seems to me he’s being backed for this, and other races, like he’s the next Kauto Star.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Agreed Steve,
Djakadam
is a horse I’ve always liked. Backed him for the Golden Miller. Undoubtedly well handicapped, very little doubt he’d have been involved in the finish that day. Think of any of the first three; Taquin Du Seuil, Uxizandre or Double Ross if they had 10-7 !!! I made a note of Djakadam to win a big handicap this season… But was thinking more about the Paddy Power. Djakadam travelled well at 2 1/2 miles, so isn’t crying out for this trip. Would’nt be a problem if it were 3 miles, but got to be a doubt for 3m2f110y. imo That doubt doesn’t seem to have been allowed for in the betting.
Rocky Creek
was one I lost quite a bit of money on last season Steve, Hennessey, Argento and Grand National. Fairly good handicap mark, but level of form looks exposed now. I’ve come to the conclusion he doesn’t want to win. Head gear/ear plugs would be interesting. Travels well but doesn’t find a great deal under pressure. Could be one to back before the race and lay in running, when travelling well around the turn for home.
Also agree with Gord, 10/1
Smad Place
looks over-priced. RSA form hasn’t really worked out that well so far and isn’t as well handicapped as Djakadam. But is still unexposed and improved a good deal in his second year hurdling. Could be quite a bit more to come over fences. He’s one I’ve backed for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, so hope so!
The other one I like is
The Druids Nephew
. Showed improved form for Neil Mulholland this term. Including last time out, racing over 3 1/2 furlongs further than before at Cheltenham when Geraghty let Sam Winner get too far in front (possibly anxious to preserve stamina). However, stayed on really well to close the gap to 1 1/2 lengths, with 25 and 12 lengths back to the 3rd and 4th; seemingly with running left in him. Off the same mark here!!! Slightly less of a test (furlong shorter and flat track) should suit, so improvement likely. 16/1 is imo too big to ignore.
Value Is EverythingNovember 21, 2014 at 16:28 #495936Does anyone else think Djakadam is appalling value at as low as 9/2 for the Hennessey?
I watch the markets daily Steve and
Djakadam
5/1 was a 10/1 shot barely a fortnight ago, that tells me Stable monies talking here as the horse certainly hasn’t had a sneaky pipe-opener.
Many Clouds
7/1 has also seen solid support even though he was freely available at 12/1 after his debut at Carlisle,in his case thats because punters have seen enough to say he’s a Hennessey player.I cant have ‘Rocky Creek’ 12/1 nor ‘Fingal Bay’ 8/1 for this as they dont fall into the pattern of a Hennessey winner.
Smad Place
10/1 ticks all my boxes apart from the fact he’s not getting ‘One Mans’ flyweight.
When I go for a bit of a touch as I did in the JLT with ‘Taquin’,I watch every move from the opposition and I vividly recall thinking "I know we have ‘Uxizandre’ and ‘Double Ross’ covered"….However I do remember thinking "Thank ****Djakadam
fell", he was still travelling ominously well when falling 4 out.
I’m a great believer in picturing a race unfolding in my head before it happens, its a great feeling when things pan out,the trouble I have with this years Hennessey is that I knowSmad Place
is good enough to win,he’ll be up there popping away from the off but with 6 left to jump I see this
Djakadam
sitting there laughing off 10-7.I hope my fellow basically out stays him because if he doesn’t the weight will tell and the Irish horse will win!
November 21, 2014 at 20:51 #495962Any news on if HADADRIAN’S APPROACH go for this race think is 14s now for it
Only worry for Mullins backers is he is 0/41 in handicap chases in UK can win handicap hurdles.Strange got poor record in big staying handicaps in UK
November 21, 2014 at 21:12 #495966I like Smad Place, but have a feeling he’s going to end up the classic bridesmaid horse – highly reliable EW, but just won’t win many
