WORCESTER racecourse, flooded when the River Severn burst its banks at the end of last month, has been free of water since the weekend but that has left an unusual and unpleasant problem.
The track, which will hold an inspection on Monday ahead of its next scheduled meeting on Wednesday, has been the scene of a rescue operation by the Environment Agency to save thousands of fish stranded by the receding waters, but many have died producing a stench that has affected much of the city. ……
The fish had been stranded in the centre of the course which is owned by the council rather than the racecourse, which only takes responsibility for the area on racedays. However the council said it had no legal obligation to remove the fish.
"we have no legal obligation to remove your fish" … i can almost imagine that conversation, but then again, why should they as it is a private racecourse
if it re-opens next week and there is fish on the menu, i’d tread carefully

That’s a problem on an unprecedented scale.
It’s left the racecourse executive floundering.
When they were told about the fish problem, they couldn’t believe what they were herring.
They’ve well and truly haddock with this bad weather now.
etc.

July 13, 2007 at 11:10 #107673I know how it feels to leave a few hundred ‘squid behind at Worcester racecourse.

July 13, 2007 at 11:22 #107679a fishing thread imo
July 13, 2007 at 11:27 #107681The real "it’d be funny if it wasn’t so sad" thing here is that half of Worcester is now good to firm, the other – riverside – half a mixture of soft, heavy and unraceable.
Ascot has managed to produce an almost identical mess of underfoot conditions with a fraction of the rainfall and no river to disgorge itself all over the track periodically.

July 13, 2007 at 11:49 #107686no need to carp on about it welsh wizard, i bet you had a whale of a time – is this the second racecourse this year to have been invaded by pikeys ?
July 13, 2007 at 12:35 #107691I think this is probably the tail end of this thread but feel that we should acknowledge the financial cost of the flooding, which may well leave the course without a pot to piscine!
They should be racing soon but with the dorsal shut, it must be a real headhake for them…
July 13, 2007 at 12:43 #107692..have they checked the stands for other hazards?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
…..badgers were being driven towards the city because of flooding in marshland
