Is it just me who finds the flat racing at the moment boring. Tomorrow there is a flat and one AW in the afternoon surely AW is for winter not summer yawn yawn bring on October and get the jumpers back less racing more interest
August 10, 2015 at 20:38 #1169592There is even a horse rated 10 running at Carlisle. Is that a record
August 11, 2015 at 11:50 #1170237I remember years ago there was a horse called Mojo who had a BHA rating of 2. Considering the horse at Carlisle has never beaten a single horse home in 5 starts (he is shown as 6/7 on his debut due to a horse pulling up lame,) it raises the question of what pleasure must the owners get watching the horse get beat 25l + in sprints?
August 11, 2015 at 16:15 #1170380Tuesday is generally the quietest time of the week for Flat racing (bar Sundays). There is a lot of filler racing out there but it’s not all that bad.
We have listed races at Salisbury and Gowran Park tomorrow, group 3’s at Salisbury and Leopardstown on Thursday and a listed race at Newbury on Friday to look forward to.
I certainly don’t look forward to 3-4 runner races in the NH season, that was a far too frequent occurrence last season.I agree about the AW though, I have no interest in it until November then I stop punting on it after the Good Friday meeting.
August 11, 2015 at 17:18 #1170392I’ve cut down my betting considerably and not even watching a lot of the midweek stuff unless something catches my eye when looking through the cards and even then it will just be a replay when I get the time. I have to say that I am enjoying the bigger races and meetings much more for doing so.

August 11, 2015 at 17:44 #1170396It is always a quiet time of the year but it will hot up again next week with the Ebor meeting!!! I have to say it has been a fantastic season so far so the odd quiet week is allowed imo.

Fantastic in what way?
August 11, 2015 at 18:43 #1170400A brilliant Derby winner, a brilliant Guineas winner, a brilliant older miler, a brilliant sprinter. Fantastic fantastic. Top class horses in top class races. What’s not to like? The renaissance of Dettori, the up and coming Hugo Palmer. I could go on but I guess there will always be people who aren’t “racing” fans, just fans of one or the other. I love both.

August 11, 2015 at 18:50 #1170402Only really bet on Class 2 (flat and jumps) and above which generally means weekends and bigger festivals. 2nd season flat punter and have definitely found this season more interesting/exciting from a punting and fan perspective
August 11, 2015 at 23:07 #1170417If things get a little quiet in the week I study up on the 2yo’s, look through all the Stable Tours, look at the new crop of colts and fillies bySires like Galileo, Invincible Spirit, Dark Angel, Dubawi etc. also Duke of Marmalade and Canford Cliffs are making their mark now.
You can sometimes sort out a good class 2yo that has won on the AW or in Cl.5 Maidens. I never usually bet on races below Class 4 unless it is a 2yo Maiden.
Boring…never. I love the flat. Dreading Champions Day at Ascot as for me it heralds the end of the flat season.
Next year we have Frankel’s crop making their first racecourse appearance it’s not just me and Mr Jonibake who can’t wait for that to happen.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...August 12, 2015 at 16:26 #1170672There is just as much, if not more tosh over the sticks. It is generally only a Saturday when I get interested in the jumping fare. In reality the horses there are ones not fast enough to compete on the flat.
It’s true that the flat horses retire quickly but for many of them their legacy lives on through their progeny and we can watch Canford Cliffs offspring this year and look forward to whether Frankel can be a 10th of the stallion he was as a racehorse, as Jac and Joni have said.
Sport is what you make of it and I spend a lot of my time planning ahead for the Flat racing, looking for value bets.
My wee advice for Jump fans is to watch recordings of Flat races and set the video playback to half-speed. That way you can imagine you are watching a jump race

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Value Is EverythingAugust 12, 2015 at 19:41 #1170688Each to their own but I would have thought low grade National Hunt racing would always be more interesting than low grade Flat racing.
For the most part that is what you are getting Monday to Friday and plenty of the weekends (if you don’t include Ireland) will consist of a couple of not very exciting condition races surrounded by a mass of pretty ordinary handicaps.
From a betting point of view with the exception of the Festivals I can’t be bothered with midweek racing any longer.
A couple of quality horses and a bit of chit-chat about pedigrees doesn’t really paper over the ever widening cracks.
August 16, 2015 at 07:30 #1171479Yesterday, Saturday, on the flat there were a total of 31 losing first favourites, 15 in the frame and 16 out of the frame including 3 odds on. There were 8 winning 1st favourites. There were 21 winners with odds between 5/1 and 22/1.
