Arazi,It looks like the owners of Sir Percy committed the cardinal sin in horse racing. They left the money on the table and walked away. You never lose the sense of ownership even when you sell a horse. Ask Tom Costello.
On another subject the smartest man this week is the man who decided to take his horse to the french derby instead of Epsom. If he is not good enough to win in france he is certainly not good enough to win at Epsom.
If Franki wins will he go freelance this year?
June 3, 2006 at 20:53 #72519Probably a very ordinary Derby. When horses finish in a bunch it is difficult to believe they are all great horses. More probably they are all ordinary. For example the third horse was Coolmore’s 3rd choice. The second is a maiden! That must mean something. The 4th beat the 2nd last time they ran.How many would beat the 4yo ‘s in the King George? None in my opinion.Imagine the pleasure of having sold Sir Percy for a princely sum and using half the money to back him anti post to win the Derby!
June 3, 2006 at 21:16 #72520Have to hold my hands up regarding Guineas horses running in the Derby. Congratulations to connections of Sir Percy and all who backed him.

Another way at looking at the debry is that it was won by a grp one winner and a clear second in the gunieas to a possibly exceptional horse
Also, some well touted contenders left behind. Could be that first four (five?) home will all prove to be very decent

Could be, but in my opinion unlikely. If there is a superstar in the race it is the fourth.
June 4, 2006 at 11:30 #72523Tend to agree David. The fourth was very unlucky and could be quite special.
Not sure if you would get the same result on a more conventional course between the first five. My money was on Visindar who in my opinion was beaten fair and square on the day. Lets hope the first five are all exceptional. They are all young and lightly raced so they could be anything.
June 4, 2006 at 13:09 #72524I think its a bit early to knock the form. Hala Bek and Visindar should improve loads with experience and I don’t think Sir Percy liked Epsom at all, especially going downhill. SP has been beaten only once in the Guineas, has won Group 1’s and has stamna and a turn of foot. I think he’s very good.
Might be worth remembering Mill Reef didn’t win the Derby by miles, neither did Nijinsky and it was a close finish in 86 when Shahrastani beat Dancing Brave.
Blanket finshes usually indicate an average race but not always so in Derbies IMO, Epsom is an odd course. The best horse usually wins but it often doesn’t appear visually to be their best performance.

June 6, 2006 at 19:56 #72525The winner defied the strongest recent trends in that he ran in the Guineas and did not win his last start- tend to think that if Hala Bek had run in and probably won the Dante, he’d have been a more trend-fitting winner. As it was greenness seemed to cost him victory. Every year gives you more information, but I’d still favour those prepped over further than a mile next year.
