The impressive thing about Pink Floyd is how they dealt with the loss of founder Barrett , a very troubled soul , the 70s was prob the best decade for albums , start off with Glam ( Bolan was the man ) prog rock , punk and then new wave at the end , plus you had Band on the Run , one of the best albums ever , no padding required , every song a belter , look the escapism of bluebird , Linda couldn’t sing but she sure made Paul write some great material

T Rex’s ‘ The Slider’ album is first rate from start to finish, without filler. Although I was at that age when I sold out to Punk from 1977 onwards (attending concerts too), I now look back and cringe and would put the first six years of the decade as the period when so many great performers were at their ultimate peak – Stones, The Who,Led Zep, Sabbo, Deep Purple, Wishbone Ash,Clapton, Bowie ( though some who prefer the discoey sound would say late 70’s),ELO( again some would disagree and say late 70’s), Bad Company (Paul Ritchie up there with the owners of the best rock singing voices) – Queen too. IMO their best album was Sheer Heart Attack released in 1974, though the preceding Queen 11, and the following Night At The Opera and Day At The Races are in the mix too Many disagree and reckon they peaked in the 80’s but they sounded part cabaret band to me by then. And that Live Aid performance that they all go on about – I believe they were only in stage for just over 20 mins. I’ve still yet to watch it – I was at York races that day; it was Magnet Cup Day.

Bolan helped get Punk mainstream , the damned were his support on his final tour in 77 , Telegram Sam is one of my all time favourite songs , I guess it must be one of Noel Gallaghers to since he shamelessly stole the intro for Cigarettes and Alcohol …. The double bass half way through Telegram ….glorious

Cancello do watch live aid , they knew after a so so album that they had to steal the show , they spent a month getting there set perfect , compare to U2 who were horrific , I remember watching Live 8 and being told by my friends that this would make me a Coldplay fan , ( they played early as they had a gig in Glasgow that night ) after watching that underwhelming set I didn’t have to say a word , Travis blew them out the water

Agree with a lot you say there Cancello. Glad you corrected yourself with the Paul Rodgers error or I would have been jumping down your throat. After Mercury and Dio IMO the greatest rock vocal.

The early Queen stuff was much better than the 80s although liked that too. They were massive everywhere – Japan, South America, North America (well until the I Want To Break Free video which the Yanks just didn’t get) and Europe.

Two other massive albums of the 70s also came later in the decade – Rumours by Fleetwood Mac and Bat Out of Hell by Meat Loaf/Jim Steinman both sold tens of millions of albums.
