But he hasn’t got one of the big jobs ….. That’s my point

March 15, 2023 at 09:47 #1639382Riding that many winners is impressive – I’m sure he notched up 200 one season – very few can do that; and he has a decent strike rate.
He’s a worthy champion.
March 16, 2023 at 11:10 #1639790We live in the North , and therefore most of my racing days out occur at northern tracks (other than when on holiday). I have therefore witnessed a lot of races that Hughes has been involved in. He is a great judge of pace , presents horses well at fences , and is strong and stylish in a finish.
As he is employed by Mr McCain , he would be better off doing as required and skipping Cheltenham , both for his own purposes , and for the owners.
Let’s be honest there are only a few jobs in the south that make it even worthwhile going to Cheltenham festival to take on the Irish.
Of those I cannot think of a current incumbent stable jockey who is better than Hughes e.g. at Henderson’s , Nicholls , Skelton et al.March 17, 2023 at 14:36 #1640186Paddy Brennan at Doncaster today – six years on from Cue Card’s fall in the Gold Cup.
Aidan Coleman at Fakenham (as is Bryony and Gavin Sheehan).
It’s not just Hughes who has to look elsewhere in Festival week.
March 17, 2023 at 14:47 #1640197And Brennan gave his backers a scare in the 2.40!
March 17, 2023 at 20:56 #1640376Coleman had several chances this week … took none
