Great picks on the top series bats, Zam.
KP has done wonders to get past Cookie for 1st innings (at 9/2, yum) – but he cannot possibly overhaul Cookie for the series, no one can!!!!
Hussey also looks the best Aussie bat along with Haddin – but I’d rather be on Hussey as he is so adaptable and comes in earlier.
Clarke looks injured to me – his back, whatever it is…he is deffo struggling. First innings he was practically throwing his wicket away as if he could not bear to be at the crease for a long period.
Hopefully, Eng can wrap this up….be major irony if rain stopped play!
If Aussies do escape it will be their turn to feel the boost of a close escape, though Eng were by no means lucky in the 1st test.

December 6, 2010 at 00:21 #331343Declaration comes at 620/5 a lead of 375!
Was like watching 20/20 for half hour or so there…
Hopefully see us take a wicket or two in the next hour or so, as I can’t do another 3-4 o’ clock stint, I’ll be like a zombie at work tomorrow if I do!
Swann could be key here as the innings goes on.
Come on England!!

The partnership rattled through the records. It became the highest for England in Australia and banished the Michael Hussey-Brad Haddin alliance to second place for any stand at Brisbane less than two days after it was set.
For the England fans, who far outnumbered the locals on the final day, it will have been the performance of Ashes dreams.
isn’t it????
December 7, 2010 at 08:29 #331446Get in!! That’s what we want. Best performance down under since Bodyline! God only knows what the Aussie selecters do now.
Sad to lose Broad, so now it’s a choice between Shahzad, Tremlett or Bresnan. Must say Tremlett’s never impressed me in an England shirt but Perth might suit him. Shahzad’s quick, but not enough experience for me. I’d go with Bresnan.
Looks like Katich is a goner for them, too.
Mike (happy).
December 7, 2010 at 08:47 #331449Here’s a stat that demonstrates the gulf between these two teams:
England have taken 31 wickets at an average of 36.5.
Australia have taken 16 wickets at an average of 87.3.
To win any Test, a side has to be able to take 20 wickets for not more than about 750 runs – only one of these teams is currently capable of that.
Personally, I’d go with Shazad in Perth – we can afford to gamble and his ability to reverse swing the old ball is a bonus.
My suggestions earlier to buy total series runs for Broad and Mitchell Johnston could be the worst bet ever recorded on TRF, as both are currently still on zero!

December 7, 2010 at 09:44 #331455Tremendous stuff from England. Can’t recall any Ashes series down under in which they’ve looked so much superior to Australia. Since Larwood, Voce and Co. indeed perhaps
Having long had a preference for fine bowling rather than fine batting I grow ever more fond of Graeme Swann. Very much an off-spinner cast from the classical mould, his mastery of spin allied to the crucial – sorts the men from the boys – command of line and length is now complete
Took to the spare bed with trannie under the sheets last night. Thank goodness it was all over by Lunch as despite the intrigue my poor ol’ peepers soon began to droop

Mmm…not a bad effort Alan, but I do remember banging on about "why do they let old farts like Tom Watson into the Open" a couple of days before the 2009 event.
Mind, I did refrain from saying "See, I told you…" when he lost the playoff.

December 7, 2010 at 11:31 #331469Did not think I would ever live to see England beat Australia by an innings over on their turf. A very proud Englishman right now!
December 7, 2010 at 20:39 #331545Excellent stuff from us and great to see us go over and dominate the Aussies like we are doing. Just hope we keep our heads and don’t get drawn into thinking everything is all too easy.
This is the poorest Aussie side I think I’ve seen in my lifetime, but then again for so many years recently they had so many absolutely fantastic players together, the likes of Hayden, Langer, Gilchrist, Warne, McGrath, Gillespie, Lee etc…they were always going to feel it losing so many players of that quality in such a short space of time.
I think I’d go for Tremlett to replace Broad in the next test. I’m an extremely proud Yorkshireman aswell so that shows I’m thinking with my head. Heard Goughie on about it earlier and he reckons Shazhad would have been more suited to Adelaide than anywhere else. I don’t personally think Bresnan is ready for a test of this nature yet so would stick with the more experienced Tremlett who is more similar to Broad than the other two.
I’m just glad we’ve got a bit of a break until the next test now because I think the late nights are starting to take effect!

Very revealing stats, AP.
The 3/1 Betfred about England for the 2nd test certainly looks good now!
At 1/2 for the series, I see little point in backing Blighty now. Maybe there will be value in the betting for the next 3 tests, whether that be England or Aussies.
As long as England don’t become complacent they will surely outgun Aus from hereon.
Mightily impressed with Cookie. And wasn’t it a treat to watch Aussies squirm as they were thrashed good and proper!!! Jingoistic, moi? Naaaah

Lock-in at the local?
Round to a pal’s bearing a six-pack?
Some clever and illegal unencrypting device?
Please advise, though not locals and six-packs. Been there, done that, now too old and can only manage cocoa in my comfy dressing gown after the witching hour

December 9, 2010 at 19:18 #331780I’ve been watching streams aswell and they’ve been very good, sometimes may be a ball or two behind but the picture quality has been excellent about 95% of the time I’ve watched..
Only downside is that it has been the sport first channel which is Aussie tv and has an obvious Aus bias with most of the commentary coming from Mark Taylor, Shane Warne, Ian Healy with Tony Greig and Mark Nicholas too.
Having said that though it has been quite funny at times when they’re clutching at straws and praying for miracles from the Aussies when we are absolutely hammering them.
