Any Ideas? I am going this year and was wanting to know if many of u have been rthere before? What is the atmosphere like, what is the story with tickets and Pubs?
Regards
GiggyOctober 2, 2008 at 16:48 #183078Have been before and am going again on Sunday.
Atmosphere is good, although be prepared for the large number of Brits – it is also very busy (probably the only day Longchamp gets a decent crowd) with long queues for the PMU.
Admission is just pay on the gate – the terrible sum of eight euros I believe.
As for pubs / bars I’m afraid I don’t have a clue on that one
Whatever enjoy the day!!!

GiggyTickets aren’t a problem. Get there early enough and pay at the door. Was 8 Euro each but don’t know if it’s gone up this year, although it hasn’t for a while.
Pubs – They’re not so easy to find. The French aren’t big on pubs and most places you’ll find for a beer will be more of a coffee shop. There are some british style pubs around but I suggest you dig them out on the net beforehand as it’s unlikely you’ll just stumble across one.

That’s a very good point. If there are only two of you going I would strongly suggest placing your bets online before attending the course.
It obviously depends on what type of punter you are. For instance that isn’t going to work if you need to study the horses inthe parade ring beforehand or are heavily influenced by market moves (which are pretty hard to understand in the PMU set-up anyhow).
On the other hand if you are betting based on form, find a R.P on the morning of the race (the internet again will give you links to where these are available) and put your bets on before leaving.
The reason:- It takes roughly the length of time of the break between races to place a bet / collect winnings.
This means that other than watching the race you’ll be separated most of the day, one will be getting beers and the other queuing for the PM terminal.

October 2, 2008 at 17:09 #183081Great help boys. I’m delighted that the Post is availible out there…As for pubs we will find some watering hole. I will have all my betting done before hand. Iam also going Saturday so i will be able to find my bearings that way…
I’m on Soldier at 16/1 so hopefully i will be sipping Champers sunday night…
I was also told that wit h the cheap tickets its impossible to see anything ..Is this True?Any other tips?
October 2, 2008 at 17:18 #183082Yeah, never buy a dwarf with learning difficulties.
It’s aint big and it aint clever.
Seriously, when you’re at the course if you’re buying quite a few beers ask the bar staff if they’ll do you a deal for bulk purchase.
You’d think they’d tell you where to go but last visit when ordering 8 cans we half-heartedly asked how much for the crate (24) and they gave it us for half price

Not sure if it will always work but definately worth a try.
BTW the standard Krone’ over there is 5% (similar to the 1664 over here) whereas the 1664 is more like 6.2%

If you can lay your hands on yesterday’s RP then Desmond Stoneham did a guide to the event including recommending lots of pubs/restaurants for racing fans.

Like the thougts of a crate of beer…Ha HAOctober 2, 2008 at 23:14 #183102If you are staying around after racing, down the road (I think left when you come out of the main entrance) you should find some large marquees run by various vendors who sell beer, wine, and food which are good value. I have even seen "connections" eat and drink in there along with everyone else.
Have a good time.
October 3, 2008 at 00:55 #183110have a great time it’s one of the best meetings to attend……
October 3, 2008 at 01:56 #183124Sadly that bar’s gone threenaps. It was great too. Big reason for going actually.
I think they tried to stick to the French method of payment (ie as you leave) and too many drunken scrotes just walked off into the night.October 7, 2008 at 18:17 #183930Thanks for all advice lads… What a day/weekend. She is some Filly. Best i have ever seen and Soumellion id the Man!!!
