Everybody loved Ginger. He was amazing in his own way but as a trainer lets just say he was a little bit less amazing.
Donald however has shot through the ranks over the last 3 years like a speeding bullet.
He seldom sends one out that doesn’t run a half decent race at least, has had more runners than any other trainer this season and has an amazing strike rate of 21%
I’ve always admired Jonjo he could win a race with a 3 legged mule but this guy is different gravy.
Jonjo has horses coming out of his ears at Jackdaw some good some bad and on average he’ll have a strike rate of around 15-16%
Donald’s so far this season is 21% and he’s had 500 runners.
Surely it’s only a matter of time before he becomes Champion Trainer?
February 4, 2012 at 09:16 #389738I really like Jason Maguire as a jockey too, i think he is quite under-rated.

Everyone used to Hurdy.
I’m the one you all love to hate these days.Oh that Ginger!

Value Is EverythingFebruary 4, 2012 at 15:42 #389811Agreed Hurdy,
Donald is certainly one of the best now and is a Champion trainer of the future. Ginger was a character, lovely bloke in his way but nowhere near as good a trainer as his son.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 4, 2012 at 18:55 #389848I agree totally. Already becoming a rival to the likes of Nicholls and Henderson. Thankfully he is getting owners with decent budgets too, so the overall quality of the animals in the yard is improving all the time.
I think its really good for racing to once again have a strong NH representation in the north. It seems an awful long time since the likes of Peter Easterby, the Dickinson family, and Arthur Stephenson ,to name a few, could be competitive with the southern yards on a regular basis.February 4, 2012 at 19:21 #389851I’m sure some will twist what I am about to say but I think he will also improve for not having his Dad ‘lurking’ in the background – he is now his own man and his continued progress will quieten those who will have said Ginger was still the primary influence in the stable.
I like him as a trainer and as a person.
February 4, 2012 at 19:44 #389857Young Donald has the immeasurable benefit of being a first generation ‘racing-from-a-child’ background in his family. His father had many occupations and was pretty much a part-time trainer.
Also Donald has the ambition and energy of youth. Ginger had the horse-of-a-lifetime which he trained superbly. He had the intelligence to realise he could live a thousand years and never have another like Red Rum so he wisely, imo, decided to be his own man and not rush around courting owners.
Granted, young Don is a fine trainer but I very much doubt his father was less talented, he simply had different priorities.
February 4, 2012 at 21:22 #389875a very consistant trainer
knows his horses well and [;ans the races for them and they are fully ft and perform well on the dayvf

Just as well Paul Nichols and Tom Dreaper, Kauto Star and Arkle never thought the same way
I do sort of agree with you though. It was often said he couldn’t train a pig to be dirty and Red Rum trained himself. Some even said to me it was all down to Lesley Rimmer who looked after him.
It means nothing because no matter what if you’re the man in charge it’s you who make the decisions.
No matter how he did it Ginger ran Red Rum 5 times!! 5 friggin times in the Grand National turning up a1 every time and winning 3. He never took the credit he should have for it, I believe I am right that is was him who first said Rummy trained himself which is of course complete nonsense.
So who knows what the part time Taxi driver come car salesman, come off his rocker comedian could have achieved.

I do sort of agree with you though.Tom Dreaper had a fair few good ones. How about Flying Bolt in the box next to Arkle? And Paul Nicholls is far from a one-horse trainer.
Their situation is much different to Ginger’s.
I think we all know where Joe is coming from though
February 6, 2012 at 16:47 #390085I heard an interview with Henry Brooke and he said that he hangs around listening to conversations between Jason and Donald. He said what those two don’t know about horses isn’t worth knowing.
February 6, 2012 at 18:42 #390106I couldnt agree more. A great trainer in the making in my opinion.
February 11, 2012 at 17:44 #390843It’s amazing how many mediocre horses improve within a couple of runs after Donald takes them over. Don’t know what he does to them but it has to be said it’s an impressive record.
February 11, 2012 at 18:04 #390847A woman next to me at Musselburgh remarked how well McCain horses looked, and I was able to tell her that it’s a regular thing. They always look immaculately turned out, and look athletic in their build and demeanour. I’ve got to the point now where I can recognise a MccAin horse before it’s saddled up.

I hate to admit this but Donald could conceivably finish top trainer at Cheltenham with Cinders and Ashes looking to have every chance of winning the Supreme. Peddler’s Cross could turn over Sprinter Sacre (no idea how much that hurt suggesting that)and Weird Al isn’t without a chance in the Gold Cup.
Perhaps not but it can only be a matter of time
