Sixties Icon and Ask have been out apparently doing some good work of late and are both reportedly going to meet in the jockey club cup at the guineas meeting, probably en route to a stab at the Coronation Cup and beyond.
Getaway is also en-route to the Coronation Cup and apparently worked well at maissons lafitte on Monday with 3yo Thewayyouare.
O’brien has reported that rough ground Irish derby winner Soldier Of Fortune is still in training and no doubt will go for some good races this season.
Am not sure if Mike De Kock is due to bring Sun Classique over from South Africa for races but he is favorite for the King George on the back of his win in Dubai.
Then you have the likes of Red Rocks, Lucarno, Sagara etc who ahev all stayed in training.
One who stands out to me though as being over-priced for this years king george is Youmzain (6th fav@12-1). He has finished second in an arc and a king george to a very good Dylan Thomas. He proved last season that he is best on good ground at slower paces at 1m4f and with the king george not usually a testing race, if the ground comes up good he would surely be in with a good chance and looks to be priced up on his failure to win in dubai. Think he could be a good forward looking speculative bet.
I know its the middle of the craven but just thought I would throw this up whilst the thought is in my head, does anyone have any from this division that they are looking forward to running.
April 16, 2008 at 22:39 #158207Schiaperelli has superb form around Europe and has joined Godolphin
I’m hoping he likes his new surroundings
April 16, 2008 at 22:43 #158208Personally I think Lucarno will be a horse to follow as I think he will continue to improve as he did all last year. He is a big colt and I think he will have strengthened further over the winter and over 1m4f should pick up some decent races. I think he will be undersetimated as well.
April 16, 2008 at 22:44 #158209Adlerflug has entries and won the German Derby last year before finishing 2nd to Quijano and in front of Youmzain.
April 16, 2008 at 22:49 #158213Adlerflug is with Fabre now isn’t he?
April 17, 2008 at 08:20 #158250Lucarno won a weak Leger. He had every chance but simply wasn’t good enough in the Princess of Wales Stakes at Newmarket. I really don’t see him being a major force in Group 1 races around a mile and a half this summer.
Soldier of Fortune remains grossly underestimated and having shown he doesn’t need soft ground in the Niel, will carry all before him this year. I think he’s a good bet at 10’s for the King George. It’s sure to be his big target, something you cannot say about most currently in Coral’s ante post list.

Apparently not. He’s entered in the Jockey Club Stakes & Coronation Cup over here and his trainer is still noted as Hirschberger in the RP entries list.
I’ve kept a half-eye on him since his German Derby win, and thought he should have taken his chance in the Arc last year given the easy ground (strictly on a line through Youmzain it wouldn’t have been a bad idea!). I’ll be watching out for him this year again, but will only consider an interest when there’s cut in the ground.April 17, 2008 at 09:06 #158267No, Adlerflug is still with Jens Hirschberger, his trainer in the German Derby, at Diesternich Stables near Schlenderhan Stud (GER) – and Germany’s main hope in the big European races over 12f. with the Coronation Cup as early-summer-target.
Schiaparelli is an interesting prospect – he is a tough horse with few speed, but once in front he doesn’t give in. Nevertheless he has never met really good horses in international top-class-races so far. May Sheik Mohammed have that luck with this horse he hadn’t with former purchases.
German-owned older horses, that are trained by A. Fabre this season, are Aspectus (a miler) and Persian Storm (an intermediate with no speed so far). Both disappointed in the Prix d’Harcourt (GII) 2 weeks ago.
In the Ganay on April 27th, Axxos and Saddex, both from GER, are entered. Axxos is a similar type as Persian Storm with no finishing speed so far. Saddex was a bit unlucky in the Arc last year, perhaps the 10.5 f of the Ganay are to short for him, nevertheless he should show some good performances in top-races this season.
And don’t forget Quijano – a very brave gelding, who got some unlucky races by his rider recently at Woodbine, Hong Kong and Dubai.
April 17, 2008 at 09:09 #158270Peeping Fawn is one I am very much looking forward to.
She is still in training, isn’t she ?

April 17, 2008 at 09:14 #158272Is Duke of Marmalade still in training with AOB?
I fully expected him to win a big one last year but they couldn’t seem to find his true distance.
If he has progressed this year he may be one to watch.
April 17, 2008 at 10:46 #158282… I’ve kept a half-eye on him (i. e. Adlerflug) since his German Derby win, and thought he should have taken his chance in the Arc last year given the easy ground (strictly on a line through Youmzain it wouldn’t have been a bad idea!). I’ll be watching out for him this year again, but will only consider an interest when there’s cut in the ground.
Don’t forget: Youmzain did all the running on the outside in both big bends at Baden-Baden. So he did some 20-30 yards more than Adlerflug in the Grosser Preis von Baden and was a very unlucky 4th (I bet Youmzain that day, but not in the Arc ).
In Germany there are some traditional inhibitions to run a 3yo that late in the year in the Arc, we still search for a late-maturing horse who will show his best performances on the track as a 4 or 5yo.
April 17, 2008 at 11:34 #158291I bet Youmzain and scorpion (both 66-1) for the arc last summer. Youmzain for a slow pace, scorpion for a fast one. Was gutted that it was so close, he should really have won.
I think he’s one of those horses who has to be trained to the minute, but when that is the case he’s right up there with some very good horses.
April 17, 2008 at 11:43 #158294If Peeping Fawn has retained her ability then I think she will sweep all before her. Although Coolmore would surely prefer Soldier of Fortune to.
April 17, 2008 at 20:31 #158422I haven’t spoken to Peter Rau for a few months now, and I’m hoping to catch up with him on Saturday. it will be interesting to hear how Saddex has wintered – I know he really likes the horse, and when I last spoke to him (pre-Arc), he said that it was always going to be tough, but the horse was in really good form. If hecan maintain this, I thing he could have a great season.
I was surprised how close Adlerflug got to Quijano at Baden-Baden, as the ground was bottomless when he won the Derby at Hamburg. I know – it took me an hour to get all the mud off my shoes!! I thought he would only act on really soft ground, but he surprised me a lot in the Grosser Preis, and maybe could be worth looking out for.
Andrasch Starke is one of the best jockeys around in my opinion, but he’s got it horribly wrong on Quijano recently. Both at Woodbine and Nad al Sheba, he gave the horse too much to do after hitting traffic. However, my opinion is that Quijano shades it for me as the best older middle distance horse in Germany.
There are two horses that haven’t yet been mentioned. One is the 7 year old Bussoni. 1 1/2 miles is probably his minimum trip nowadays, but he won the Bosporus Cup in Istanbul over that trip last year, beating Pressing and Laverock. Whether that form is quite up to the very best I’m not sure, however he has suffered quite a bad injury, and I don’t know when he’ll next be on a racecourse. The other horse I think could do well this year is the 5 year old Lauro. He’s only had 1 run in about 18 months, but he’s being prepared for a race in the US, and he’s already beaten Bussoni last year.

April 21, 2008 at 14:17 #159094Adlerflug is now a most likely runner in next Sunday’s Gerling-Preis (G2, 2,400 m, Cologne) – so he is probably going to miss the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket in the first week of May.
April 21, 2008 at 17:19 #159127Quijano, Musical Way and Balius take on the local in the APQEII Cup at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Peeping Fawn is my pick of the 4yos but agree with most that has been said on this thread.
Sun Classique arrives in Newmarket in a couple of weeks and she goes for the Prince of Wales’s stakes.
April 21, 2008 at 18:24 #159132Peeping Fawn..had the idea that she would be aimed at the Arc this year. Prefer my winter racing to the flat but sometimes a horse grabs my attention, and it’s usually a mare; Ouija Board, Bosra Sham, Lochsong….Peeping Fawn falls into that category, can’t wait to see her run.
