Is Willie already odds-on? They could hand out the trophy today, if they wanted to. No dangers around.
December 26, 2025 at 23:27 #1748633How many times did the “champion trainer in waiting” have zero runners at Kempton on Boxing Day?
December 27, 2025 at 07:49 #1748646I believe Skelton is still odds on.
Mullins won last season’s title without winning one of the big 4 races at the Festival but he ran amok at Aintree and won fairly easily in the end.
I think it may well come down to the GN again this season.
Skelton may need to win one of the big ones at Cheltenham but one of the horses will need to step up whether that’s The New Lion, L’Eau Du Sud or Grey Dawning.
I’m hoping Skelton wins it. He certainly deserves it.
December 27, 2025 at 12:08 #1748691Cant see willie even getting close. He’s 1.8 mil down now, horses still arent running great.
There seems to be more depth in the challenges home and abroad that he may not hose up the festivals as he has in previous years.
December 27, 2025 at 20:07 #1748796I agree with AB. He’s currently getting panned at home by Gordon Elliott whilst Big Dan is 1.9 mill clear and will probably be on £3 mill by the time Cheltenham starts. It’s unlikely he’ll land a 1-2-3 in the National again (worth around £800k) which decided it last year and the Brits have strong contenders in the Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup. The threat of losing his Irish title may well mean he’ll have to throw more darts at Fairyhouse and Punchestown and less at Ayr and Sandown. Under attack at home and abroad, the Empire- like all Empires do- may be about to fall.
December 27, 2025 at 20:23 #1748798Lads have a look at his stable …. he should have a good day tomorrow to , Skelton is doing a terrific job but he’s still got very few graded horses , Willie has them coming out of his ears , it’s not just winners , he fills his pockets with place money , he’s the best in the world
December 28, 2025 at 14:51 #1748892Not saying he’s not the best HDLG but DS improves year on year, he is getting better horses and using a different strategy this year. Two grade 1’s at Leopardstown today and Mullins doesn’t win either, which tells you something.
December 28, 2025 at 14:58 #1748899Willie has quality and quantity , unless it’s confirmed he has a virus in the yard I’d expect him to start firing , Skelton is doing a great job and placing his horses very well , however what’s he got for the principal races at Cheltenham , he doesn’t even have a GC horse , Grand National ….
