Yep, I’ve checked it again a few times and the links on the right look too prominent to me. Their taking the emphasis away from the message board itself. Make them smaller and more discrete imo.

The main message board is so narrow, yet approximately 1/3 of the width of the screen is blank.

The horses silhouette on the grey background looks fantastic on the homepage but you’ll never see if you dont scroll down. :(

The text colour on the headings Topics, Posts, Last Post, looks about right contrast wise.

Is there really any need for the proposed new homepage? Comparing it to the forum’s index page, the only difference (other than the various forum sections, of course) is the introductory passage; everything else – forum highlights and sponsorship – remains exactly the same. It would make more sense to me to do away with the homepage altogether, drop the login area down to the right-hand column and put a little about the site just above. It would also read far more logically – desirable content taking up most of the page, with the right-hand side holding an introduction, the option to join, login area and adverts (in that order).

I think a little bit of work needs to be done as regard the use of gradients (perhaps the ‘view unanswered posts’ and ‘view active topics’ options are distorting the effect somewhat), but when you enter a discussion that’s all that should be on the page. Why, when I’m reading (or contributing to) a topic of my choice do I need to know the most popular threads across the entire forum, which threads have been started recently and who posts more than anyone else? Detracting from the focus of the page doesn’t seem to make sense.

There is also an issue with the right-hand column if someone includes a photograph in their post (see the ‘Network Racing…’ thread).

Overall it’s a definite improvement, but it still needs to be heavily refined (though the look of the forum itself is great).

Were the homepage to be kept, James, perhaps the following would be a more sensible layout:

    Example: Homepage

    And for the forum:

    Example: Forum

For me, TRF’s contributors make it the draw that it is and it would seem defeatist to minimise the space the forum itself occupies (making full use of the available space would also eliminate the photograph issue). Advertising space could be exchanged for topic highlights if necessary, with additional space provided lower down the page to maintain the current marketing potential.

I just thought I’d illustrate what I tried to say earlier (sometimes even I get lost reading what I have to say).

Excellent Equitrack. Just the sort of uncluttered, no frills design message boards need.

    .. just like that .. :D

I like it, well done! It’s very posh.

It seems a bit laggy and the ads slow it down quite a bit.

I don’t like the most active user box, I don’t think you need it.

Other than that nice .. 8)

    Hi Robert

How do you quote a post within your reply?

Click on Quote on the post that you want to quote, instead of clicking on post reply.

Inside that quote, you can then delete the bits that you don’t want, being careful not to remove one of the square brackets, or you’ll end up with the garbage that TAPK sometimes has.

If you want to quote from more than one post, what I do is click on quote for one, then use Ctrl-C to mark it. I then go back < and click on quote on another post, and then at the appropriate place I press Ctrl-V, so that I’ve got quotes from two different posts.

You can make quotes up, using the square brackets: –

What does my middle initial stand for?

Thread is about the new site.
The dev site does not show "Quote" in my browser to be able to click on it. The old site does, except it is hard to type in the quote box as the cursor jumps around.

    Yes, sorry Robert.

Doesn’t make any difference if you’re logged in or not.

    No quote facility.

You can report someone, or click on a ^ which sends you to the top of the page. Maybe the ^ is supposed to be the quote facility, but isn’t?
