Not confirmed yet but it looked like old Taranis broke his front leg at Cheltenham tonight. Too sad for words.
May 1, 2013 at 21:56 #438154Racing UK reported "a bad injury" but that looked a fatal one to me … nasty. Poor chap – he didn’t fall and not sure what actually happend at the water jump.
May 1, 2013 at 22:18 #438163Wasn’t he nursed back from injury a few years back? Showed such promise as a youngster; what a sad end.
May 2, 2013 at 06:01 #438200Just read this, sad news. RIP, old fella.
May 3, 2013 at 17:06 #438387Taranis was a very promising young horse – he won 10 out of 22 rules races including Grade 1 chase and was rated 162 at his highest when trained by Paul N. He ran in the King George in 2007 and pulled up lame. He returned in Jan 2010 with a good win. He was in Paul N’s yard until March this year and then went to nearby C R Whittaker. Won a point and was competing in a ladies hunter chase when he unseated at the water and was so obviously badly injured. I HATE water jumps and I’m trying to find out if he was the victimn of the obstacle – maybe breaking his pelvis??? to me it looked more than a leg … but I couldn’t watch too closely as it’s too upsetting to see him so distressed. I hope they got to him quickly …
May 4, 2013 at 16:33 #438557I am not happy that Taranis has been lost. I remember that Paul Nicholls retired the horse after he proved too fragile to train. It seems irresponsible for a horse who has had two or three serious injuries to reappear as a veteran in hunter chases.
Taranis was my profile picture for a long time on here and one of my favourite horses. I loved his big donkey ears and that enormous leap he put in at the final fence of the Ryanair a few years ago. It was puissance-style!
RIP
May 4, 2013 at 23:53 #438655So upsetting to hear this news especially when The Young Fella stated he had been retired by Paul Nicholls as being too fragile.
Now they have lost him..RIP Tarinis brave boy
Very angry at your sad loss, this shouldn’t have happened.
