I have watched the re-run of yesterdays Irish Oaks several times now and i can only remember one other time i saw a performance like that in a group1.
Rainbow Quest
sauntering past Old Country and Rae Guest
in the 1985 Coronation Stakes at Epsom,Interestingly enough Rainbow went on to win that years Arc!Sariska
certainly deserves to take her place in this years line up! It never ceases to amaze me how some folk instead of enjoying such performances try to knock them! The filly couldn"t have won any easier, she was never out of a canter, incredible! had she slogged it out with "Roses" and just got the better of the runner up,it
would still have been a good performance, but to win like that is special!
Not only does Sariska look like a colt she is improving like one! i for one have become a fan! 10/1 for the Arc was the best i could get!July 14, 2009 at 02:07 #239509Just read an article about Sariska in the Observer that I’d missed, and it was really interesting [and a bit Black Beauty/Cinderella, as well]. She was overlooked by everyone because she was bred at the same time as a Rainbow Quest filly foal who was far lovelier and showed more promise. Sadly she died in the field after an accident. It was only when the big ugly duckling that was Sariska was in training that they realised that they had something a bit special. There is talk in the article of keeping her in training next year; keeping her to races such as the Prix Vermeille this year but taking on the colts in 2010. Sounds like she has a Ouija Board type temperament as well.
July 14, 2009 at 12:03 #239532Interesting Moe,
Sariska
has improved a ton since winning the Oaks
and she certainly has that progressive profile, mainly because she is such a fine big scopey filly that you could see her becoming a better 4yo! i am sure they will take on this years Arc field as she fits in as one of the more likely winners! Who knows what might turn up next year! Another horse i would like to see kept in training as a 4yo isMastercraftsman
, he could do a Duke of Marmalade and finally get to run over a 11/2m! Trouble is he will have made Sea the stars, see stars when he knocks him out in the Juddmonte! He is still the unfinished article and he will fill out even more from 3-4yo!
I backed Sariska for the Arc at 10/1,she will win it next year!
July 14, 2009 at 16:28 #239564This years
St Leger
winner runs tonight in the Grand Prix de Paris,
Age of Aquarius
,who should find these conditions perfect! I am a big fan of Black bear island, but i am convinced he is a better horse with some cut in the ground,he owes me nothing! Freemantle wants 11/4m on soft ground to show his true potential! This Beheshtam is no Montmartre and at 7/4 will be my Lay of the day! If the French Derby form is reliable then Westphalia who finished in front of this favourite is not as good as any of the above O,Brien horses! i will gladly have the field running for me!
Robbed at the last minute by injury! The price of betting Ante-Post hurt that day,I had over £150 on at various prices! He would have won pulling a train!
July 14, 2009 at 22:42 #239615Well if
Age of Aquarius
isn"t at least fav for the
St Leger
after that run in Paris, then i know nothing about horses! We all know thats not true! To be fair to Beheshtam, his short choppy action was never suited to fast ground, but even on soft he wont be winning any Arcs! By the way
Mark Johnson
is getting more P****d by the minute on TV and for someone i admire,he is beginning to talk alot of B******s! Just shows you
shouldn"t mix Alchohol with horses! Until after the race anyway! Out with the Montrachet me thinks!Classic TAPK! having laid Beheshtam at 6/4 that day!
July 15, 2009 at 01:00 #239626This is the worst bit of race planning of the year! Its tricky enough finding the winner of either the 7f Ascot "International" or the Goodwood "Mile" but to have only 6 days between both is a joke as most fancies are double entered. Here"s my idea of the winners
Fareer
for the Ascot race,i have taken 14/1 e/w,i backed him at 33/1 for the Brittania,so there is a sense of loyalty towards him,he is a potentially smart colt who wont mind the drop back to 7f and won the Brittania easier than the official distances show! For the Goodwood Mile i like
Roaring Forte
he too is improving at a rate of knots and have also got 10/1 e/w about him! The joke is i could get this the wrong way round! I have to give J,Gosdens
Racer Forever
a mention, this fellow has the ability to win a big race, its just a question of when he puts it in!
Fareer was a fantastic victory for me that day at Ascot,i remember the lads from Middleham park buying the second too! Then sold it very quickly for a profit!
July 15, 2009 at 13:06 #239672Foresight is crucial to my line of thinking, otherwise you will never find the big prices on the big horses! It also applys on the other end of the scale as far as laying horses is concerned,i want the shortest price, admittedly
i could have laid Scenic Blast at 5/4,instead of 7/5,and also Beheshtam at
6/4 instead of 7/4.So long as the price is 2/1 or less i am happy! i will never
lay anything bigger than that, its just not worth the risk IMO! The amount of tall stories you here about laying is unreal! The most common is "I made a fortune laying Exotic Dancer for the Gold Cup"! He traded at between 20 and 30 at the time to a max of £100! No way are you going to win a fortune
when thats the guidelines you are playing too! You might lose a fortune if
the old boy got lucky! Too risky for me! Anyway i am layingSea the Stars
at 5/6 to win the Juddmonte Ante-Post,because if it rains he wont run anyway and if he does run then
Mastercraftsman
will stretch him like an elastic band!
Ouch! Burnt fingers that day! Still a pleasure to watch even now though!
July 16, 2009 at 12:34 #239792Here"s an interesting bet!
4/1
that
Haley Turner
can win a Group race before the end of the season! That would give me a free bet on
Art Connoissuer
winning the Diomed at his favourite course in September! Trust me I"m a Doctor!
Ouch again! Hayleys always forgiven though!
July 17, 2009 at 00:16 #239869TAPK has unearthed a Golden Nugget,it was always at the back of my mind throughout the winter, purely based on his breeding that a trip across the pond could be on the cards for the
Mastercraftsman
. I had a horrible feeling that he could have been trained for the Kentucky Derby! Hindsight shows he wasn"t ready for it back in May! He will be ready for this years
Breeders Cup Classic
though and at 10/1 i am happy to take the risk, he wouldn"t even need a pacemaker, should he be fortunate enough to grab the rail and lead early,it would just be a case of getting the fractions right! (unlike last years turf Johnny!)
Another loser, i had £20 e/w on him at 10/1.
July 18, 2009 at 00:40 #239959Jamie Spencer
was being polite when he referred to the "Mug Punter" as "Paddy the Punter", he knows as well as anyone that at least 90% of the public that gamble are "Mugs"! That there is no doubt! Who else funds the high street bookmaker? The mug punter see"s Jamies rides as Black and White, simple as that! They dont consider the Conditions/requirements of a race to replicate their last winner! Some Mugs will bet a jockey blind and are still waiting for Frankies magnificent seven to come round again! These are the people that get under the skin of genuine racing folk, because they know sweet FA about Horseracing but shout from the rooftops when they lose! Jamie sits on a variety of horses, like i drink a variety of wines! They may all look the same but there"s a world of difference in quality! Sour Grapes are best served in a mug!
I am ready for a new Soap box!
July 18, 2009 at 12:53 #239994Two horses i rate higher than what they have actually shown run today, both are capable of winning their races although i have reservations about the ground being too soft for both!
Palace Moon
at Newbury and
Raaiedd
at Ripon! I will back both at around 5/1 e/w hopefully! If the ground comes up heavy at Ripon i will have a saver on
Moheebb
as he handles the ground better than most! I shall be looking a bit more thoroughly at the ground before i lay anything,as Soft ground brings the best out of potential losing favourites!!
Moheebb was a good winner for me at 5/1 earlier on in the season!
July 19, 2009 at 00:47 #240061In between willing
Lee Westwood
on in the Open, i did catch
Raaiedd
run like a pig again, he will have to step up to 11/2m now as he is looking one paced, i wont write him off just yet as the ground was very soft up there today! Monsieur Chevalier was the highlight of a poor days racing! Its all very well trying to think like the trainer of a horse when picking targets for my main Ante-Post selections, but its most re-assuring when the likes of Sir Michael and Aidan confirm them! ie
Tartan Bearer
running in the King George and
Mastercraftsman
running in the Juddmonte! I am particularly looking forward to Tartan Bearer swooping past his one paced stable companion Conduit next Saturday!
More Classic Foresight from the King!
July 20, 2009 at 17:45 #240218I thought Inxile was a good thing in last years 5f sprint at Ayr today, but he was beaten fair and square by Look Busy,he did give the filly 7lb though!
Fullandby
split the pair of them, giving the filly 10lb, she will have had to have improved significantly to win today with 9-10lb, less her 5lb claim! I have had an interest at 16 on Fullandby, should be a good race! I hope the old Monkey Reverence runs well too! But not too well!!
Fullandby was just becoming frustrating when in he goes on the all weather at 10/1,i obviously never backed him then ,but nailed him at 6/1 at Doncaster to show a small profit!
July 20, 2009 at 18:10 #240221Those of us who have faith in
Hayley Turner
winning a Group race this season and have supported her at 4/1 had may as well collect now as
Syrian
is a certainty to win one! He reminds me of his Dad so much,(Hawk Wing) i am busy shopping for a price for the 2010, 2,000 gns! TAPK is never far away with his judgement,i like this fellow a lot, hints of
Dancing Brave
is not a phrase i use lightly!!
Where"s the delete button? This rogue has since been gelded and will win over a 11/2m next year! But where? Royal Ascot!!!
July 21, 2009 at 13:03 #240314A Class 6 maiden winner at Yarmouth, will have the Trends guys laughing their socks off now that i have suggested
Syrian
is an aspiring Classic contender, thats probably why getting
50/1
wasn"t too difficult for next seasons 2000 gns! I am not bothered the time was 4 secs slower than standard either. This colt is bred to be a miler,i see he has a Derby entry, that shows he is obviously well thought of! Yesterdays race did nothing but give Syrian a blow, he hated the early slow pace,he travelled like a class colt and quickened through in a heavy rain storm, by the time he crossed the line his head was fighting Haleys efforts to restrain him.I saw a very smart progressive looking colt with an attitude that wants to win,an almost aggressive style in his action which does remind me of the Greatest horse ever to set foot on a race track, Dancing Brave!! I know its wishful thinking that he could be that good, but we shall see!
Geez i said it twice! What a plonker!
July 22, 2009 at 01:26 #240384The build up to this years
King George
is beginning to remind me of the "Rumble in the Jungle"! Now we have musical jockeys with Ryan Moore yet undecided as to who he will ride! I am not in the slightest bit bothered which he chooses,as Mick Kinane is more than capable! Should Ryan choose to ride the winner
Tartan Bearer
the market will be turned on its head and the bookies will make them 5/2 joint favs! TAPK is well documented in taking 12/1 about him and will be delighted to see him run!
Classic King,i always knew Tartan would run!who was it that said he wouldn"t Fist?
July 22, 2009 at 12:06 #240417Looking ahead to the
Tote Ebor
i like the look of Aidans
Changingoftheguard
he is a 3yo who falls short of being up there with the likes of Age of Aquarius who for some strange reason has an entry also! He does have the profile of an ebor type though and 3yo"s are quite capable of winning this historical handicap, his trainer did win it back in 2001 with another 3yo colt in Mediterranian! I have taken 10/1 e/w about him,as the majority of the field are exposed handicappers! His form with the progressive Harbinger reads well too, thats when they were testing the water with him and he has been stepping up in trip since!
Another sickener seeing the King of Foresight get robbed at 10/1! e/w saviour though!
