Always a belter of a race this to kick the meeting off, and this year looks like no exception……

No big shock from me here, and I’ll be siding with old regulars Justanotherbottle and A Momentofmadness.

Having deserted the pair of them for a while, I’ve bet them both their last runs, however in the case of Bottle, he unshipped his rider at the start, and that was that.

The main problem with the pair of them is just that…..the start.

Madness is prone to missing the break, and that’s once he’s been coaxed in, while that wasn’t the first time at Ascot, that I’ve had concerns with Bottle near the stalls.

That presents a real problem then Antepost. Both are way overpriced, indeed the 20’s for Madness on his Goodwood run is unreal, while the stable switch for Bottle was always going to end up with him coming to a race like this with “plot” written all over him.

Don’t know what to do. Best approach is probably to watch the market. If there’s significant “blue” on Oddschecker, then I might have to move, but I’d gladly sacrifice a couple of points to bet them after Final Decs.

There’s obviously stacks more of interest in there, not least El Astronaute, who’s due to bounce back, while the trio of….

    Copper Knight
    Tarboosh
    Watchable

    …look particularly dangerous as well.

Worth noting a few firms already going five places.

No bet yet then, for reasons mentioned, but I’ll be keeping an eye on it.

Although I love the course I find this track one of the hardest to call.
A few interesting contenders which I think will bring out a strong field with prize money being at a premium at present.
No firm views on this contest until I see the draw!
    good luck to all

Yeah Kid, should be some race.

I’ve decided to bet A Momentofmadness early, at least for the win. The 20’s is just too big.

I can’t go too big just now, given his antics at the start, but I’d at least like a bit of it, for all I’ll be sweating at the stalls.

The going is currently Good and there is some rain forecast before racing starts on Wednesday. I’ve worked on that basis on my selections fro this race which is run at the in between distance for sprinters.

Main selection for whom fitness has to be taken on trust is COME FROM THE DARK 20/1 in a place. Relatively lightly raced, he hit a decent vein of form toward the end of his three-year-old season and has every chance in this if he can pick up from there. The more rain the better for this one and I’d be surprised if Ed walker didn’t have this one ready.

Hans Solo Berger (20/1 in a few places) has been in sound form this term and generally progressive. This one wouldn’t want as much rain as the main selection but has a chance if there’s not too much cut.

Hyperfocus (varies at time of writing from from 11/1 to 25/1(!), the latter with Coral) ran a decent race in the Great St Wilfrid which suggests he’s not far off his best and will be suited by any cut. Has a leading chance on his second here to Gulliver in soft ground last October.

Jawaal 8-1 is my main bet in this, but I think that I’ll also bet Tarboosh ew

I think Tarboosh is a great Each Way shout Kris. I’ll stick with the two though, and it could get messy this anyway for me with Copper Knight and Watchable both standing their ground as well.

I’m delighted to see that El Astronaute doesn’t go, as that would have definitely seen me go three handed.

Can bet my pair properly now, with Final Decs obviously in, but their prices holding, so should be able to wait for BOG.

This is definitely a race to have more than 1 selection, and I think that Arecibo has a massive chance at 7-1, while Hyperfocus would be the backup at 14-1.

I was going to have a small ew ap bet on Arecibo a few days ago, but I missed the big price, + I’m kicking myself.

I’ll still have a small bet on him, but 8-1 is not the same in a race like this. I have bet two already, Copper Knight at 28-1, + Magic J at 9-1.

Shame that A Momentofmadness doesn’t go, and that decision not to have a big Antepost has saved my skin a bit.

He was my second biggest bet of the week after Euchen Glen, so a few quid to play with here.

I’ll definitely put more on Justanotherbottle, already on 14’s and 18’s, and I’ll split a few quid across the others on the original shortlist.

Won’t be putting all the Madness money back on, as it may just be an omen, but Bottle still a fair go.

    Justanotherbottle 18’s EW 6 Places

I’ve gone for Tarboosh EW as well and Copper Knight but in all honesty nothing would massively surprise me here.

Do you think they’ll put Madness away for another crack at the Portland VTC? It was half in my mind before they pulled him out that they might be aiming him at that longer term.

Portland all day long for him now mate surely.

Good luck with your pair today, I’ll no complain if you collect from them.
