Still can’t see any Classics being run this season. No prep or qualifying races and not enough staff to keep the horses ticking. Without using a crystal ball, this (Flat)season could be a real write off. Sadly….
April 15, 2020 at 17:35 #1487347Agree, I cannot see there being any Classics this year and probably not very much racing at all. I doubt that racing is going to resume while other sports are suspended, behind closed doors or not.
There is an article in today’s Guardian that questions if a “Derby” run away from Epsom and not at the beginning of June can really be considered as the Derby. I think that is a fair point.
I think the authorities will need to sanction one off classics for four year olds next year. And maybe the three year old classics will have to be put back a bit for one year only to allow the three year olds to get a bit more experience.
April 15, 2020 at 18:57 #1487350It is very likely horse racing will start before other sports I’d think cork
Youd think horse racing and golf would be the first few to start up again due to being held in big open spaces and there being no physical contact
When that is we can have no idea
I read France and Germany are hoping to start racing again in may
April 15, 2020 at 21:01 #1487351The Open Championship was called off. That takes us up to late July, so by that reckoning there will be no racing until August. If so, there is not going to be much of a Flat season.
Personally I think there is a good case for starting to relax the lockdown measures but that does not appear to be the way the government is thinking and I cannot see them being lifted any time soon.
April 15, 2020 at 22:30 #1487357It really is time to accept that a flat season as we know it is simply not happening. Scrap the whole thing now and at least there is no effort wasted on trying to fit the current narrative into an ever reducing window. It can come back largely as normal next year.
You can still hold meetings once restrictions are lifted, makes no difference to most people whether it’s part of a wider season or not. Let’s face it, they just want something to bet on whether it’s the Derby or a tinpot race at Wolverhampton on a Monday afternoon.
Hopefully the jumps can get going soon enough for the next season to be largely unaffected, that seems a realistic possibility at this stage.
April 15, 2020 at 22:36 #1487358Los Angeles planning to ban all sports and concerts until well into 2021.
I wonder if the Americans will stand for their sports being cancelled for another year.
New York also planning to ban all sports until mid 2021 as well.
April 15, 2020 at 23:21 #1487359The open was cancelled because they didn’t want it without crowds and most of the participants (even the British ones) live in the USA, which is why the other majors were delayed not suspended
I meant more golf courses in England being opened for members to play than tournament golf (I have a large vested interest in this being a golf addict)
April 25, 2020 at 14:55 #1487598Sky News source says the Premier League could be back shortly as they want to finish the season to enable transfer window to open and funds to trickle down to the lower leagues and give the country a moral boost.
The article also mentions bringing back other sports including horse racing.
April 25, 2020 at 17:51 #1487601If racing comes back it will be with fields of no more than 12, I read. This will leave
a lot of owners having paid to have kept their horses in training with no runs. We’ve hung
onto one horse in the hope of provincial tracks in France going ahead, but no one wants
to pay these sort of costs with the continuous carrot of racing going ahead.January 10, 2021 at 19:51 #1517143Rumours doing the rounds racing in UK to be cancelled again, along with football…..

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!January 10, 2021 at 20:53 #1517147Those would be pretty bad rumours, I guess. The Classics 2020 were saved by putting them back 4-5 weeks. I can’t imagine a Cheltenham Festival being run in mid-April or even a week or two later. Aintree and Punchestown would be run in Mai or June? No way. But I hate speculating at this stage.
The way racing is being staged these days, there is no reason why it should be interrupted, imo.
Can’t see any risks arising from all the trainers and their stable staff when at the track. A cancellation would be just too pathetic….January 10, 2021 at 21:04 #1517149Football has to be cancelled after today.

Tell me this isn’t true ffs. Racing I’m talking about, not bothered about the football
January 10, 2021 at 21:12 #1517151Same really hope it isn’t. Footie deserves it agreed Ginge, hope you’re well.
Agree as well Ruby, don’t see why, but i guess if hospitals are at breaking point, could the use of ambulances at tracks be seen as unnecessary like last time?
