Does backing Lochsong at last knockings on a saturday evening to win the Abbaye the next day count as ante-post?
November 7, 2008 at 09:05 #188527Interesting point!! I suppose some would say no but technically any price taken other than SP could be considered Ante Post.
November 7, 2008 at 09:18 #188530Neither successful nor the opposite – my first serious ante-post efforts will be aboard Zacinto for the 2,000 Guineas. I’ll just prod away with a few quid here and there over the Winter.
I did back a juvenile colt called Wilander at 66-1 for the Blue Diamond Stakes (Melbourne’s premier juvenile race) before he raced. Won on debut by eight lengths and was wound into 15s. Won the prelude for the main event by 2-3 lengths and was 4s favourite. He had had enough once the main event came around and was well beaten eventually.
Did have little dabbles on Soldier Of Fortune for this year’s Arc.
November 7, 2008 at 09:50 #188532I only do doubles antepost as a rule.
Best $100 into $25k, "Over" to win the Doncaster and "Streak" to win the Sydney Cup.
Several other wins the next best 20k Northerly to win the Caulfield Cup/Cox Plate double.
Biggest near miss had 400k result if Northerly had won the Melbourne Cup that year but trainer Fred Kersley decided not to run him because of the 2kg penalty for winning the Caulfield Cup taking his weight to 60kgs.All The Good to win the Cups double this year for a 182k result.

Not as such Fist ~ Ante Post betting has a very specific definition. Any bet placed after final declarations are made is generically referred to as "day of event", even if that is more than 24 hours before the race.
November 7, 2008 at 15:38 #188560Fists – Fair enough you fancied Zakarva, as did pleny of other people including myself, as she was an unbeaten short-priced favourite – hardly an inspired selection by anyone.
November 7, 2008 at 16:53 #188577I know it’s not racing, but just had 50-1 on Barack Obama.

Not ahead? I would hate to see a list of your losers. Mus be like War and Peace Phenominal picking !!!
November 8, 2008 at 00:20 #188653GUYS’ Some great responses to my post! Its an amazing topic Ante-post
betting! some punters detest it Others like myself live by it and its not just that feeling of being able to spot a potential champion, but the confidence that is required to put your money where your mouth is! Confidence in your own ability is everything in Gambling! When you have a losing run your confidence takes a thrashing! My favourite saying regarding Ante-post betting is "If you want the price to pay! You may have to pay the price!November 8, 2008 at 00:46 #188659Not ahead? I would hate to see a list of your losers. Mus be like War and Peace Phenominal picking !!!
Thanks, Fist. I suspect I am ahead and certainly the only really substantial wins I’ve had over the years have been ante-post. However, I have previously owned up on here to a somewhat scattergun approach to ante-post betting and the list of losers would certainly fill a decent-sized book.
November 8, 2008 at 01:02 #188664Marble, So and so being Mastercraftsman! Bills unfortunately come 1st
thats why i am still playing after 25yrs! Seen people in bookmakers have £3000 trebles! 1st 2 win and guess what! they are what i call MUG PUNTERS and 90% of gamblers in this country are exactly that! Obviously to a smaller stake but the principle is the same! GREED!November 8, 2008 at 01:40 #188666FoF,
Re Gembridge Jupiter ~ I reckon you’re wrong about Cloudwalker. Right trainer and right colour, but the horse GJ came 2nd to was Rage Glen imo. Could I be right?
The mare Rage Glen was trained by M Lambert, as was Cloudwalker once, however the latter was in the care of Fulke Walwyn in the season in question (1983/4). Rage Glen definitely beat GJ at Wolverhampton in a Handicap Hurdle in 1983. GJ won 4 from 8 the following season, including a handicap hurdle at the Grand National meeting.
I beg your pardon Rory you are correct. Great stuff Firefox Cloudwalker def won at Ayr in a handicap and we got 12/1 about him as well. He was definately ridden by Tony. I could swear he was still with Mick lambert at that time..could one of you check that out for me I would be very greatful.
I could be wrong 20 years is a long time but it could have been just about the same time as we were adding boxes to the yard at Bellwood Cottages and Tony had just started training. Marten definately moved Cloudwalker away from Mick Lambert the second Tony had gone.

Gimme a bit of credit when deserved FFs………I said she was the best I had seen since Sea Bird II and stuck my neck out by saying have your lot on. mortgage your house etc… after the race lots came up with similar statements…That was in early July if you care to look back the thread……..only Aragorn the 1st and one other poster said they fancied her at that time the rest of you joined in after she had won her race before the Arc. You let us know you fancied her in October when she was 2/1 after showing how good she really was. I admit I don’t know for sure whether you backed her before that or not and I am not saying you didn’t
You weren’t the only one who joined in at that stage one poster even went from no way she could win to she looks a good thing.
Water under the bridge mate, forget it and let’s try and find the next one is what I say.
November 8, 2008 at 03:54 #188699Ok Fists – I cannot dislike you as your enthusiasm is infectious.
November 8, 2008 at 04:10 #188703Jesus don’t try and change my mind.
November 8, 2008 at 04:58 #188708Ironically, Cloudwalker was back in the care of Tony Charlton at the time of his fatal fall at Market Rasen, which must have made it even more of a blow. He was originally bought to go hurdling by Jonathan Crisp, who was Willie Carson’s agent, the first jockey’s agent in this country, I believe. Crisp spent a small fortune on bloodstock but saw a fairly paltry return on his investments.
