Great runs from the pair of them but it was an odd National. The two false starts mean they didn’t go too quick down to the first fence and a lot of horses coming from off the pace ran well – Mon Mome, Comply Or Die, Arteea, Cerium amongst others – normally need to be handy early on to stand a chance.
April 4, 2009 at 22:21 #220341I think if Black Apalachi had stayed on his feet the race would have been a typical National in that a horse that was prominent would have won the race rather than one coming from behind, but that’s racing.
April 4, 2009 at 23:32 #220360I think that’s very wishful thinking. When BA was leading nothing was in a hurry to get there. Lots of horses were going very well inbehind and it was only a matter of time. Charlie Swans found hinmslef in front and looked like he was going to win for a time and look where he finished.
As far as Wilosn is concerned well done but he’s still a plonker. Running mules in the Gold Cup to say he has a runner to his high So pals is just BS. None have won and none ever will. Guys a nusiance
April 4, 2009 at 23:59 #220366I thought Parson’s Legacy was going well when he came down fairly late on. I love this race. I can’t believe how bloody quick it all happens for such a long trip. One holds ones breath at almost every fence!
April 5, 2009 at 00:46 #220382Of course, if they pay the entry fee, they’re entitled to take their chance. I just think a line needs to be drawn somewhere.
It is, and in fact as it turned out getting into the National was ‘9lbs tougher’ than getting into the Gold Cup.
130 is not an unreasonable mark for the Gold Cup and the standard of the National has been pushed up a long way in recent years so that making the cut is some way above that 130. By the official measure Cerium was entitled to run in both races, end of story.

April 5, 2009 at 03:58 #220409Black Apalachi seemed to pitch on landing at a couple early on the second circuit and to my mind looked to be finding things harder, so not altogether surprising he got rid of his jockey like he did.
April 5, 2009 at 15:52 #220464The only apologies due on Cerium would be ones coming from the Hall of Shame bookmakers: No Morals, Hills, Laddies and Afraid Done.
They should be made to each-way backers of the horse with them.
April 5, 2009 at 16:55 #220471Fergus Wilson – high society pals !!
Fist, they’re a pair of retired maths teachers who made a fortune from the property boom in Kent. Both came from poverty stricken backgrounds, they still live in the same house they had fifteen years ago and they drive second hand cars.
I’ve no idea what his motivation is, but impressing high society pals certainly ain’t the answer.

Over watering would expalin the national, as with most of the festival winners. Gd-sft (good in places) was the going description given for the national course before the rain on friday night came, it’s not that often lately that you would get gd-sft (let alone was probably on the worse side of gd-sft) for the national. So that has probably made it a bit more testing, hence the horses coming from the back. The order of things changed so many times, starting with the fall of Black Apalachi, at one point I thought offshore account looked like the winner.
I had a feeling on saturday morning thast there could be a shock winner, with all the talk of the rain, but never really studied the card well enought to try picking out a few contenders, just went with eurotrek, who once again, looked to hate the national.
April 6, 2009 at 03:00 #220589Having slated Fergus Wilson for running his no hopers in the best races, I am looking forward to Alastair Down eating humble pie tomorrow in light of Cerium’s magnificent 5th placed effort today….
Maybe Paul Nicholls, who also tried to bully those same connections into not running the Gold Cup, will also be offering his congratulations?
We’ve all had a go at them at some time but fair play to both horses they ran blinders and I hope they come back next year. I wonder what would happen on softer ground. Carioum for next year’s National, don’t rule it out.
April 6, 2009 at 11:38 #220597If someone’s paid their entry fee and the horse is qualified for the race I don’t see a problem, personally if I had a good horse the more "bad" horses in opposition in the race the better.
April 6, 2009 at 13:08 #220603How about Cerium for the Scottish National?
Or will connections think he’s had too hard a race at Aintree?

I think connections will want to put him away now.
There’s plenty of Group 1 targets in the summer to consider.
April 6, 2009 at 19:54 #220639Re Cerium: Just seen this reported in the Racing Post:
Murphy said: "The vets reckon he has fractured his skull and his rider Keith Mercer thinks it might have happened at the water when Zabenz fell and one of his hooves connected with our lad’s head.
Here’s a link to the full story:
April 6, 2009 at 20:33 #220643That poor horse, I hope they are true to their word and the horse is allowed to fully recuperate and not run in every staying chase under the sun.
April 6, 2009 at 23:36 #220667Horse will most probably be fine in a few weeks – is not as bad as it sounds.
April 6, 2009 at 23:41 #220670Thanks Cheekster, that’s good to know.
