It may be harsh on Drowne but knocking Dettori’s record around Eprom will only make you look like you don’t know what you’re talking about.
June 4, 2008 at 12:29 #166349What more could you ask for than 3 Oaks?
Dettori is the best big race rider currently riding, imvho. If it were your horse, what would you do?
June 4, 2008 at 12:51 #166356Since Franki is so popular in the jockeys room there should be no problem with him stealing rides.People just love a loud mouth show off. The race will decide the value of loyalty.I only hope the horse does not get injured before the race.
June 4, 2008 at 12:58 #166359There is no place for loyalty or sentiment in sport.
You put up the best available jockey surely. If I was the owner of a horse in a Classic I would expect nothing less.
Compared with Dettori what has Drowne achieved?
June 4, 2008 at 13:04 #166363Firefox,
I understand your point of view but am confused by some of your comments. To compare Drowne’s style with Dettori is, imo, erroneous.
Also, Dettori may not look strong (visually) in a finish, but I can’t remember many instances of him being weaker than another jockey, and also what is equally, if not more important than perceived strength in a finish is the ability to have the horse correctly balanced, and in this respect Dettori has few peers.
Whilst not Epsom, I would also consider the amount of Group 1’s (usually in France) that Dettori has stolen from the front on inferior horses..
Ps .. I may be missing something (or before my interest became serious) – how has Drowne demonstrated loyalty to Charlton?
June 4, 2008 at 13:24 #166371No place for loyalty in sport. No place for fans either in sport i suppose.

What do have "fans" have to do with a jockey being replaced. I would have thought backers of the horse would be happier to have Dettori on board.
If you were an owner wouldn’t your priority be to maximise your investment?
June 4, 2008 at 14:25 #166380The fact that Drowne has ridden the filly in all of her starts not to mention many times in work makes the decision seem all the more bizarre. Its not like Charlton has jocked Drowne off before in big group one races eg Patevellian, Avonbridge etc Furthermore he remained totally calm on sakhees secret in the July cup. Drowne has also remained very loyal to charlton for example choosing 50-1 Avonbridge over 22-1 shot Pastoral Pursuits in the July Cup two years ago. With all this taken into account one can only assume that the owners applied pressure on Charlton to switch to dettori, who is certainly not the best jockey around
June 4, 2008 at 16:14 #166395No place for Loyalty. No place for fans. Is there a connection between loyalty and fans in sport.Ask peter……r. I was joining the dots.
June 4, 2008 at 16:21 #166399Was Steve Drowne also jocked off Zaffeen a few years ago just before he won the St James Palace? I seem to remember Mick Channon being almost apologetic, and dedicating a good portion of credit to Drowne, in his interview immediately after the success.
Feel for the guy, but as a backer of the horse (Clowance) i do admit i see this switch as a positive, so i cannot be hypocritical towards the owners. I would have made the same decision.
June 4, 2008 at 17:55 #166410On Sunday afternoon, I got a phone call to say that Steve Drowne had turned up in Bratislava!! He had three rides and one winner from what I understand, and apparently was very complimentary about the place, and hopes to return soon! He was one of three British born jockeys there on Sunday, along with Czech based Gary Hind and Austrian resident Mark Giles. Drowne didn’t have a ride in the big sprint (won by Hungarian sensation Overdose), but I think he was unplaced in the big Group 3.
I agree that Frankie is seen as a bit of a superstar, and has loads of experience in the big races, but could it be that Steve Drowne, due mainly to lack of opportunities, and being ‘jocked off’ more than one big race chance, could join the likes of Gary Hind, Robert Havlin, Dean Gallagher and Philip Carberry and become arguably bigger name in mainland Europe than back in the UK? Certainly I feel for him – on the flipside, an English Classic without Frankie seems almost unthinkable!

June 4, 2008 at 18:08 #166412Real shame about this being done to Steve Drowne, reminds me of the time when David Dennis was knocked of Kingsmark for Mick Fitz in the GN a few years ago and in the same way Liam Heard was jocked off Neptune Collonges in this years GC.
I do like Frankie as he does show our sport in a good positive light and the crowds do like him but Steve knows the filly like the back of his hand and should by rights keep the ride.
At least Dandy Nicholls has kept loyal with Adele Rotherey in Saturdays Dash at Epsom, good to see a man being true to his word.
June 4, 2008 at 21:11 #166448A total and utter disgrace. Why does Dettori even get this ride? It is typical of small fry owners wanting the big jockey for the big occasion. I would be more than a little peeved if I were Drowne as you say, he was very loyal Charlton last season when he had his terrible run and indeed at this start of this season.
I just hope no-one is on Clowance e/w as if she isn’t in front a furlong out, Dettori will ease her down as he could give two hoots about finishing in the places.
To all concerned, hang your heads in shame.
June 7, 2008 at 14:17 #167152steve can always say he was jocked off the oaks winner( had he been riding it.)
June 8, 2008 at 09:45 #167343I enjoyed the gloss put on this by Clare Balding: "Frankie’s picked up a spare ride in the Oaks on Clowance."
June 8, 2008 at 20:32 #167426When i heard that Frankie had the ride on Clowance instead of Drowne. The trainer said that Frankie has a better record at the track and in classics. You should still stick with the jockey who has been riding for you. Oh well
June 8, 2008 at 20:35 #167428Drowne or Frankie? – A no brainer imo.
