One of the things that could put a cloud over next week’s festival is if one (or more) of the big races has a sloppy start that ruins the chances of one of the key contenders.
Jim McGrath has just made reference to the starts at Cheltenham beginning with the runners coming onto the track from a chute. Why is it that they do that? Was it to try to stop them charging at the tape?
March 8, 2015 at 09:32 #807628Which Jim McGrath was this? I thought that starts from the chute on the run had been stopped since the introduction of the new procedures? Don’t know how it could have stopped them charging the tape, think it was some brainwave from Stier that had no basis.
March 8, 2015 at 10:02 #807676Why cant they all stand still? Because thats what they are going to have to do after a faulty start anyway? It defies logic to me that flat horses go from a standing start but jumpers expect to be on the move.
Explanation anyone …….And this is a multi million pound industry starting with a large elastic band
March 8, 2015 at 10:29 #807681It was the CH4 McGrath.
The other logic defying element, highlighted by Graham Cunningham, is that on ‘start 1’ they are supposed to jig-jog in but on ‘start 2’ they are supposed to stand still. Where on earth is the logic there? Surely one way or the other is better than the other and should be adopted for each and every start.
I think I’ll shut my eyes five minutes before the off on Grand National day.
March 8, 2015 at 11:11 #807732The starts to the big field, valuable races at Sandown yesterday were pretty messy.
Hopefully not a pointer towards next week.
