7 Horses left in at this stage:
The New One
Zarkandar
Albert Hall
Court Minstrel
Hawkhill
Seabreeze D’ho
Jumps RoadInteresting 2 French trained horses could be sent over, don’t know a lot about either of them anyone shed further light?
Presuming the French 2 aren’t up to much it looks a 2 horse race between Zarkandar and The New One. The Twiston Davies team will surely be out for revenge after Aintree and with the trip being shorter than that day, you’d be expecting The New One to win here if both he and Zarkandar turn up.
December 10, 2013 at 23:11 #461439The entries for this are ridiculous.
Farcically bad, low on quality.December 12, 2013 at 00:13 #461518Just have to hope there is Winning Distance betting available on The New One!
December 12, 2013 at 12:53 #461549At present, I cant see past him for the Champion.
I remember good old Hardy Eustace winning the RSA Novice Hurdle before spending much of the next season out of sorts. But i always had faith about him dropping back in trip and managed a few quid each way at 33-1 in the Champion. Always looked like a horse who could win over 2 1/2 but was happiest over 2 on a stiff track. TNO looks similar but in possession of even more talent.
The Neptune won by TNO was run at a steady pace and the Twiston Davies horse settled it with a turn of foot.
He has the tools and stamina to win a frenetic Champion or a muddling one.Our Jeremy might be a freak but he hasn’t proven himself this season. TNO has.
December 13, 2013 at 09:07 #461627What a woeful entry and this follows Hurricane Fly’s cakewalk the other day. It is all very well bigging up the Champion Hurdle but is it really asking too much to see one or two of the decent ones taking each other on. If this is the kind of turnout they can expect Stan James must be wondering whether it is worth putting the money in.
December 13, 2013 at 12:54 #461644Well, effectively its a match isnt it.
Would have been nice to have a third very good horse in there but there is still intrigue.
Whats the lowest price anyone would take The New One at?

December 14, 2013 at 15:21 #461811Nice performance but as a race, it was hard to know what to make of jumps road being so close. I wonder if Zarkandar was a little flat.

December 14, 2013 at 17:22 #461817With three cracking Irish Champion candidates and two outstanding Britishers, high class Grandouet and Oscar chose to go for awards in another field. Ruby rocked, Melodic out of tune and never going to Rendezvous here, Flame being rekindled and Cinders kept at home.
MTOY won at Newcastle and Kempton so won’t turn up at Cheltenham. Who else is there? May be a Rolling Star somewhere, can’t see any other who’d enhance this race.
Isn’t it expeting too much for this to be a competitive event? Whenever there is a long odds-on favourite it seems to generate criticism on these pages. We had the Champion Hurdle favourite taking on the third best (available) British "2 mile" hurdler – Zark.
May well see MTOY take on TNO over Christmas, they’re not going to run against each other every time.
Value Is EverythingDecember 14, 2013 at 19:05 #461826Not sure what your getting at Ginge…
I havent criticised the winner. Also, I was wondering quite why this race was so competite . I just didnt expect a horse rated several stone behind the principal pair to finish that close. I certainly wouldnt be more or less inclined towards the winners prospects in March.

December 14, 2013 at 19:46 #461829The RP write up on this race is poor. Is someone on work experience?

The Fly is still the one to beat.

I was not responding to your post SHL. MarkTT described the entries as "ridiculous" and "farcically bad". Stilvi said they were "woeful", suggesting other good horses could have taken them on. From what was available – I don’t see that we can expect better. We had the best British horse available taking on the third best British horse available. It is unfortunate for betting purposes that The New One’s potential saw him start a very short price – but that is often what you get when a horse like that turns up. Racing is not all about betting anyway.
Britain has the best four days racing in the World, but we pay for it elsewhere. So dominates the scene only makes connections regard good races as preliminaries in the lead up, effectively sharing them out. It’s the same year after year.
At least this season – by the end of this month we will have already seen MTOTY twice and TNO twice (may be three times!). Which is more than some other years top Hurdlers. Am suprised there might even be a Clash Of The Titans before March.
Value Is EverythingDecember 15, 2013 at 00:11 #461854Whatever the quality of the others, TNO has beaten the horse who beat him at Aintree, and done so easily after bungling the last and idling. Zarkandar had excuses too after young Powell’s brainstorm, but had things panned out the way STD wanted (not to lead till after the last) the result would have been no different.
TNO travels supremely well and that potent turn of foot could prove the decider come March. I’m a wee bit concerned about his jumping which can border on sloppy at times, but should improve for a faster pace.
Of those we’ve seen so far this season, I’m confident he’ll beat them. Our Conor remains the potential bogeyman.
December 15, 2013 at 12:04 #461873D’you think that’s why NTD wants to get a couple more runs into him before Cheltenham to gain more experience? I’m so pleased that the stable have got such a good horse.
December 15, 2013 at 16:28 #461902I don’t know, Moe. I see NTD described his jumping yesterday as very slick. It was in places – as usual – but he can look awkward and deliberate at times.
I believe young Sam is now trying to talk his dad out of running at Kempton, but he’s a man who likes to race his horses . . . ask Pigeon Island

Dont worry about ‘Our Conor’ Joe he wont get near
Our two
.The Hurricanes day is over so its all about tactics on the day, your fellow can win the Champion hurdle from any angle,Sam might try and call AP’s bluff as to who can hold on to their horse the longest but I believe he’ll try and take the sting out of
MTOY
by committing 2 out.Sadly for me if he does and fluffs his lines at the last he’ll still pick up and battle my Lad has that horrible ‘Harchibald’ tag to shake off.I hope both horses turn up on the day, should either one fail to make it the others an Odds-on shot.2 horse race bar none imo.

No I don’t think it is expecting too much but I suspect my opinion is influenced by the fact I can go back to an era when top horses didn’t spend most of the season avoiding each other. It has been worse than ever this season. If you are happy with Hurricane Fly v Nothing, Annie Power v Zarkandar and The New One v Zarkandar then I think you are either too easily pleased or just playing devil’s advocate. If I was a sponsor and these were the best turnouts plenty of money could produce then I would seriously be looking elsewhere.

Interesting theory, Gord. If it’s run at normal CH pace, I think Sam will hold on with confidence given how he got up the hill last year V how MTOY did. If its relatively slowly run (and TNO has not yet been in a fast run race), he might well go for it some way out.
