Bachelor Duke won the Irish 2000 Guineas as a maiden
That’s just off the top of my head.

September 11, 2008 at 17:02 #180484is Washington Irving definitely running? It’s odd that he’s such a big price with Ladbrokes.
September 11, 2008 at 17:09 #180485Well its final declarations now so I’d say that he is going to be some sort of pacemaker for whatever Murtagh rides.
September 11, 2008 at 18:14 #180488Maybe I am wrong and once again we will see Aiden O’Brien with his mobile stuck in his ear telling the connection how easily FF won but I can’t help but think this is a fillies year. Namely Zarkava, Lush Lashes and Look Here.
Taking it she runs I will definately have an interest
September 11, 2008 at 21:00 #180500I believe Aiden speaks to his wife or his father on the mobile. They are a very close knit family and his father is quite unwell. They share his satisfaction. (see" The man who can’t stop winning" .Roisin Ingle. Irish Times, July 12.2008)Connections watch the race so no need to talk up the horse to them until the following Monday when they assess the outcome.
September 12, 2008 at 00:42 #180529I would be confident that Washington Irving is running on his own merits. The Ballyroan performance when fresh just reeked of a St Leger trial.

Cheers Andy I always wondered why he was on his mobile everytime I saw him on attheraces etc. Not knowing about his dad being unwell I kept thinking "What is it with this man"
September 12, 2008 at 09:07 #180554Clare Balding asked him during Royal Ascot and it is his mum and dad he’s speaking to..

September 12, 2008 at 12:47 #180579Cannot have Washington Irving at all.
How many maidens have won a classic?
To be fair most leger horses have decent form (without being exceptional) in lower group races at 1m4f and look like they would be suited by further. AOB has had enough decent horses who get 1m4f very well that he hasnt had to race Washington Irving much, but of all AOBs WI looks the one most crying out for 1m6f. Frozen Fire reminds me a bit of red rocks two years ago, he got 1m4f a bit to well to look like a genuine 1m6f horse. Its the fact that Washington Irving has always looked more of a traveller than a speedster at middle distances that makes me lean towards him, afterall he is an e/w price, and could very well win. He was the best of AOBs in the derby when unfancied bettingwise, and I like him here tomorrow.
Scorpion, although he had better form and wasnt a maiden, wasnt far off in terms of form when he won, and he was pretty much the be-all and end-all of AOBs middle distance group1 sorts that season. This year AOB has had so many to choose from that WI has had an easy season so far but think he’s shown enough to merit his chance.
September 12, 2008 at 12:58 #180580I think I saw his eldest son at Ascot running around in a topper.Really nice picture. They seem such a lovely family.Usually they come out to the BC at Santa Anita for Disney Land! Aidan still wears his Confirmation pin! No interest in anything else,(eg cricket ,roses,) it seems except horses, just the horses. The same as Tiger and the golf, totally focused. To me or you it may seem boring but then again who are we to say?
September 12, 2008 at 16:23 #180616Aidan still wears his Confirmation pin! /quote]
It’s actually a Pioneer pin, to represent the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association, whose members do not drink alcohol. Many people in Ireland "take the pledge" not to drink at confirmation but few keep it to Aiden’s age!
Interesting that Ladbrokes have gone a stand-out 5/2 Frozen tonight- expect him to drift tomorrow.
September 12, 2008 at 20:30 #180670I opened the door of at newmarket and Aidain and his brood pottered throiugh, they are all tiny, it was like watching a family of hobbits, they were polite and thanked me.
Not sure what too back its open as a the grand canyon,
September 12, 2008 at 21:42 #180694What price the filly starts favourite tomorrow?
September 12, 2008 at 21:45 #180697I’m still on the brink of backing her……There’s still doubts in my mind but i’m so close to clicking on that 4/1…..
D’ya reckon she’ll go off a lot shorter Carv?
September 12, 2008 at 22:00 #180703I will be surprized if Look Here wins the Leger tomorrow,
Despite winning the Oaks at 33-1 it is case of if you didnt go to the wedding dont go to the funeral and i can see here being turned over.
As for the winner i have no idea
