Canford Cliffs I think we be seen at his best in the Foret, I think he’d rip them up at 7f in a demolition job.
June 15, 2010 at 15:48 #300873I have a feeling though that many are using stats from years gone by and are putting total faith in those – ‘cos there don’t look to be a lot between any of the principle runners…
They might not be wrong either as the stats are strong!
Was the result really that unexpected today?!
June 15, 2010 at 15:52 #300874Jeez Fist,
Greenham, Guineas, Irish, SJP – ain’t it time for a little break?
June 15, 2010 at 15:54 #300875The classic TRF battle. In one corner, Fist and the Eclipse, in the other, TAPK and the July Cup . . . .
June 15, 2010 at 16:01 #300876Some stats – pointers:
Since ’82 – only ‘Rock Of Gibraltar’ & ‘Henrythenavigator’ have completed the Newmarket-Ascot double.
Look for horses that had their last run in Ireland or France – all of the winners share that distinction going back to ’98.
Runners from the Irish 2000 Guineas have a good record with 8 wins from the past 12 and only ‘Zafeen’ was out of the first two in the Curragh Classic.
This is not a race for outsiders as ‘Excellent Art’ 8/1 back in ’07 was only fourth in the betting.
If either of the first two from the Irish 2000 Guineas turn up, they must form the basis of any shortlist.Stats are there to be broken…
Stats are there to be broken…
I should have said
Hopefully
at the start of that line!
I wonder what the reason is for the Newmarket-Ascot double being so rare??
Looking at the card it would seem that the winner at HQ has been off the longest – so could it be something to do with length of time since last running?
If this is the case then ‘Noble’s Promise’ might be inadvertently tied into the stats – he’s also been off the track 45 days…Unfortunately the one I backed @ 40’s & 50’s ew – who came with a 45 day lay off didn’t get the best of rides…

Normally I would agree Gerald but as I said in an earlier post the only reason Richard Hannon gave the horse a run before the Guineas was in a effort to put him right…….when he did run in the Guineas I’m sure you’ll find inone of my posts I said he ran like a horse who blew up…….so in affect, if I am right of course, he’s been trained on the racecourse so in a way he’s only had the two runs……….I don’t mean for one minute RH has done anything wrong it’s just he such a beast of horse he probably needs more work than your lightweights to get fit.
It’s fine Red say an in form Rip Van Winkle but what’s the chances of that?……he’s run like a dog in his last two races…..he barely gets 1m2f in top class as we saw when he hung like a gate behind STS and he’s got feet like one of our Aussie brothers who’s been stuck in the desert without shoes for a week.
There’s a certain Irish fella that agrees with me that he looks like he could get further but at the end of the day RH and RH are the one’s who know better than anyone what the horse needs……..July Cup?…..is that the 6f race that runs like it’s 7f?…….Big horse like him going back in trip?……IMO that’s the last thing he wants when he only just learned to relax…I’d be very tempted to go for the Eclipse as RVW may not even turn up.
i’m not a fan of running milers at shorter trips as it can take a lot more out of a horse than a more relaxed 1m race does………..If he does run in the July Cup I wouldn’t be getting stuck into him like I did in Ireland or today………….it’s fine to say he hacked up at Goodwood and showed great speed but young horses full of zest and talent can do that………as fast as he may have looked as a 2 year old going back in trip against a true sprinting type for me isn’t the way to go.
Helluva horse if he can pull it off.
June 15, 2010 at 16:58 #300899Hearts Of Fire went right with Canford Cliffs and Canford Cliffs needed Beethoven to slam the door on Hearts Of Fire to finally shake him off, think Hearts Of Fire is one to take out of that race and his Guineas run was all wrong.
3:50
-4.8 Steinbeck (after back and lay)
+57.5 Hearts Of Fire 3rd
+74.25 Canford Cliffs 1st
-10 Makfi
Race Profit 116.95 pointsNice result, but what might have been. Hearts Of Fire 50/1 no room at all. Not Jimmy’s fault. Probably did not not make the difference between winning and losing, but still, that’s “probably” and not “definitely”. Watch out for anything Pat Eddery is running this week, they’re all running above themselves. Little frustrating to have backed Canford Cliffs for the English 2000 (on this day last year), the race that got away for connections.
Value Is EverythingJune 15, 2010 at 18:41 #300924Canford Cliffs phenomenal.
Dick Turpin very tough, how can you not like this horse.
Makfi came back with an inflamed throat – would be brilliant to see Makfi/CC/LDV along with older horses in August.June 15, 2010 at 19:43 #300939I came across RH being interviewed, maybe on Sky Sports News? The two races mentioned were both French. Jean Prat was one, didn’t quite catch the other.
June 15, 2010 at 19:55 #300941The Jean Prat was mentioned first, and then the Jacques Le Marois also/instead.
June 15, 2010 at 19:59 #300942Okay, Jean Prat is 3yo only, early July, Chantilly, 1m.
Jacques le Marois is mid August, Deauville, 3yo+, 1m.

Jean was pronounced as in the trousers, and Marois was pronounced Mararois
June 15, 2010 at 20:37 #300952Why do jockeys look for a run along the rail when it takes only one horse to block the gap? A jockey like Ryan Moore is not going to let anyone up his inside in the final effort to win. When will senior jockeys get the message? So easy to make excuses when the gap is closed.Leaves a bad after taste. No excuses when beaten fairly.
June 15, 2010 at 22:19 #300981Even if Hearts Of Fire had a clear run he wouldn’t have beaten Canford Cliffs.
It’s the ease in which CC travels in his race whilst all the other begin to work. And then anticipation that follows as you wait for Hughes to push the button and unleash the beast.
I love this horse!

That would be the Le’Clipse at Le’Zandown Gerald
June 16, 2010 at 17:01 #301210He mentioned the Sussex Stakes.
June 16, 2010 at 17:50 #301218Article this morning on the RP site. Hannon poo-poohed America. Wants to keep Paco Boy, Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin apart though, for the sake of the owners. Seemed like he wanted Dick Turpin to go for the Sussex Stakes, as he’s got previous on the course.
