I’m inclined to favour Cry of Freedom (7/2 Jt Fav on BF) in what looks quite an open race. The race is usually won by a colt with a sprinter/miler sire like Prince Spriegfried or Sri Putra but Cry of Freedom’s comprehensive defeat of Whispering Angel would suggest to me that he may have the class to manage this sharp 7f. Johnson says he is a relatively small horse which may be to his advantage here but a long-striding one which may hinder him. At least in Dettori he has a top jock aboard.

The class of the other two main protagonists has yet to be established and it is hard to know where Instalment’s slight drop in class will land him here.

    Good Luck if you’re playing.

    Sandown a sharp 7f.?

I know the course is thought to favour front-runners but I have never thought of it being a sharp course.

The long uphill straight, I would have thought, would favour a long striding horse?!

What does the standard time suggest, any time-gurus looking in?

Point taken, Seabird. If the ground was on the soft side of good I would probably be calling it a stiff 7f! I was assuming the ground here to be on the fast side of good or faster and that a possible slow pace early may not result in a true-run race.

Fr ankie’s front-running tactics backfired. No excuses, though, Cry was well beaten.

Not quite sure what happened with The Cheka there. Looked to be about to provide one of those big runs at the 2f post just like he did at Ascot but it never materialised.

Cry of Freedom and Parisian Art extremley dissapointing.

Still fancy The Cheka for some big future races though. A very high-class Grp3

I know alot of these have some lofty entries but perhaps this race while looking good on paper hasn’t thrown up anything that looks GR1 standard.

I agree with the Brigadier. Opinion in the RP seemed split today but for me when the race finished my first reactions were that it was an average race; Either that or a good deal of them are very good.

On reflection Instalment is probably the best yardstick to use and it would suggest that this was a competitive group 3 given the form comparisons with what looks a decent Vintage stakes. Come the classics though I would still be surprised if any of them make an impact.

    I’m a bit confused.com about this race :?

Two furlongs out, I thought The Cheka was gonna keep up the gallop and score by a wide margin … but it wasn’t to be. Having said that, I do think The Cheka still looks the one to follow from this lot.

Personally, I think The Cheka looked a bit weak but has stacks of huge potential and I don’t want to see him wasted. I just wished he had a better trainer. I can’t help but think that if Mr Gosden or Sir Stoute trained him, they’d really toughen him up into a beast of a horse.

I don’t know if you are being unfair to the trainer you can’t do much if you don’t have the right owners behind you. It must be very tough for her with options like those you mention being open to owners

The horses seem like a right moderate bunch and very seldom do any of them figure in the betting.

The Cheka is no doubt fairly useful and the ground may have been a tad to quick for him last time out. He has quite a high action which makes him look alittle green. I doubt if Stoute or anyone else could have done much more as he has run a cracker in what afterall was a Group race won by what is now an unbeaten horse. Richard Quinn is a very good jockey and has the common sense not to knock a young horse about. He would also advice her on what the horse needs…That is not always a firm hand to toughen him up. He may not be ready to be pushed and like many 2yo’s just needs time to mature.

He has some fancy entries coming up and I wouldn’t try and put you off, if their is some cut in the ground. You are correct he is a nice horse but whether he is Group 1 class remains to be seen. I very much doubt it. He seemed to flatter to decieve at Sandown.

I can’t see him winning the likes of the Dewhurst or Racing Post but she must think a lot of the horse to enter him in the first place. However if he is still weak like you say, getting destroyed in the likes of the Racing Post is the last thing he needs.
