Today’s win was as it should have been – but my goodness, what a huge, handsome animal he is!
That for me was the exciting part of today’s effort (plus his – for me – unexpected turn of foot.) Hope he sticks to 10F, for Dandino’s sake!!
May 2, 2011 at 17:57 #353367lets look at it in perspective, you’ve got a 126 rated horse coming here with his last run being touched off in the Melbourne Cup off 8-11.
This morning when you woke up and read the race, looked at his opposition would have considered anything over 5l victory to catch you by surprise and stand up take note?
Personally the horse won how he should have won, lets not beat around the bush this isn’t a project he’s the final article so he had to win like that or you’d ask questions.
Just so everybody knows, So You Think was trained by Bart Cummings in Australia.
Bart has been training since 1953 and has won 12 Melbourne Cups; no trainer has won more than 5, no jockey more than 4. He is adamant that So You Think is the best he’s ever trained. There are a lot of unknowns but I’d take him over Workforce if he holds his Aussie form. Workforce is a very good horse, but as the Arc suggests he isn’t an absolute superstar (or wasn’t at 3, at least). He lost the Melbourne Cup because he didn’t settle. Quite a few people including myself questioned the decision to step him up so sharply in trip and they were justified in doing so. But he was absolutely imperious down under over the middle distances.
May 2, 2011 at 18:30 #353374Corm , AGREE IT LOOKED GOOD , but clock was awful , slow pace , and to be honest we should wait until he gets a proper pace and some group horses to run at
That said its looking damn good for the summer

I for one would not dream of questioning such a legendary eminence as Bart Cummings: that’s quite good enough for me, added to the visual impression he created today. Any horse which can win any pattern race by ten lengths has to be special, whatever the lack of quality of today’s opposition.
I suspect So You Think will have Workforce on toast any place, any time. He looks bombproof, and a much more solid proposition tactically than the younger horse. Five Group 1’s and counting tell their own story.
May 2, 2011 at 18:52 #353378Very impressive, didn’t look like he was trying. Good races at the Curragh today, but watching him was the highlight.
Is he now going to frighten Workforce off from running in the tattersalls?
May 2, 2011 at 18:56 #353380I thought that was an excellent 1st time out effort.
Maybe Frankel and So You Think will meet if Frankel gets stepped up to 10f.
Something to look forward to.

So YOU Think
he’s better than
Workforce
eh Pinza? They will meet over 11/2m at some point and i for one would bet good money the 4yo will eat him for breakfast,he’s a different horse again from last year.

Well, we’ll see who’s on the menu at 12F!
But I most certainly aver, that if Michael Stoute thought the Tattersalls Gold Cup was going to be Workforce’s best chance of potting an easy Gp 1 at 10F, he won’t fancy much breakfast himself tomorrow…
May 2, 2011 at 21:57 #353402Really impressed with the Australian horse. Yes he beat nothing, but he basically did in an exercise canter.
Bring on Workforce…he was the best of a weak bunch of 3yo middle distancers last season and very much still got it all to prove now he does not have that ridiculous weight for age allowance.
May 2, 2011 at 22:21 #353407Pinza, Sir Michael has nothing to achieve by running
Workforce
over 11/4m,his main targets this year should be the King George and Arc,dual Arc winners are few and far between almost as rare as keeping Derby/Arc winners in training as 4yo’s.One of the main reasons connections have done just that is the fact this fellow has so much scope for improvement it would be a travesty to have retired him at three.
So you Think
has reached his pinnacle for improving as a 5yo and even though he hasn’t actually ran over 11/2m,it would seem his ideal trip too,his 3rd place in the Melbourne Cup confirms that, but finishing only a couple of lengths in front of the ‘average’ Holberg makes me think Workforce will eat him for breakfast and lunch,Sir Michael will tuck into his tomorrow morning without any fear of indigestion.
May 3, 2011 at 01:58 #353420Today’s result probably signifies SYT is at least as good as he was in Ozz. Timeform rated both So You Think and Workforce 133, so it will be a mouth watering match. Suspect Workforce has more improvement in him this season, Aidan might bring about a bit in his charge too. At 10f I’d have to favour SYT at the moment, purely because he’s proven aat it. However, I fully expect Workforce to be effective at the shorter trip too and there is not much in it. At 12f it would be the opposite way around. Though there is also the possibility of a consistency issue with the four year old.
Value Is EverythingMay 3, 2011 at 05:03 #353426Just to let everyone know, when he won his second Cox Plate over 2000m at Moonee Valley last October, he ran a faster sectional last 600m than Black Caviar did when she won a 1200m sprint earlier in the day. Timeform rates Black Caviar best sprinter in the world. Needs the speed on to produce his best, but if they dawdle out in front he can lead as well. In his first Cox Plate win in 2009 he had only 48kg and went straight to the front from the start to win all the way. Best distance would be 2000m to 2400m and acts on any ground. Melbourne Cup performance was very good considering the ground was very heavy and he hit the lead at the 250m but petered out the last 100 which could mean he failed to stay the trip. Having said that the winner Americain handled the conditions best and pretty good ride by Mosse, too. Can’t wait for Tattersall’s Cup and Eclipse. Watch out Workforce!

How can you be impressed by that?
Beat trees, will let you know if I’m impressed when he runs in a Group 1.
Already won 5 Group 1 races so that thought is a little late!

Yes they are: but given current bloodstock fashion
Workforce
‘s stallion career will be immeasurably enhanced if he manages to win a Group 1 over 10F first. He has never won a single race over that distance – unlike
Galileo
, for example, who was a 10F Pattern race winner before the Derby – and in his one attempt at it, got beaten for speed. Owner and trainer know very well that without that 10F pattern win,
Workforce
is likely to have limited opportunities at stud.

The elusive Derby winner, every Breeders dream.I would imagine breeders would be satisfied with sending their best mares to
Workforce
knowing that he should pass on the requisite Stamina required to at least deserve a Derby entry at the yearling stage Pinza,i doubt very much he will have limited opportunities at stud if he gets beat over 11/4m. I am not convinced he will run in the Eclipse anyway,i think he does need time between his races and he needs to redeem himself in the King George.Good to see the Aussie support for their champ on here too, unfortunately their Ante-Post vouchers for the King George and Arc will turn to ashes.

Incredible to think that there are still people around who believe Workforce ran to form in the Dante?
