I think I’m right in saying that we have a few paparazzi here as members, or if not exactly pro’s, then enthusiastic and talented amateur photographers, who I’m hoping can help me.

My pictures from Auteuil are universally grim. I got what I thought was going to be a great snap of them going over the Tribune water-jump in the Jousellin, but it looks like it’s been taken by someone with Alzheimers, despite the fact that my digi-camera was on the ‘Sports’ setting.

Can anyone give me any hints or tips that will help me take better racing pictures? I should say that I took the pictures from the stands, so it was on super-duper-zoom, and it might be that this is the root of the problem? Is there no substitute for being up-close-and-personal?

All offers of help gratefully received.

    Ta.

If using a zoom then you must use a tripod and a shutter release cable, otherwise you will invariably get camera shake …. as I have found to my cost many times.

You went wrong with the setting – ‘Sports’ is the wrong setting for French jumps racing. Doesn’t your camera have a ‘tedious low-grade fare’ setting GH?

      at Corm

Grasshopper you might want to give a monopod a go. It gives you a lot more flexibility if you want to suddenly change direction of your shot (as against just a swing around) and it’s a lot easier and lighter to cart around.

Sometimes minor flaws can be fixed up in a good photo programme. I use Paint Shop Pro which is really quite good. 8)

Yes, it has a Flat setting too Corm, though I’ve obviously never had occassion to use it.
