Watching ATR yesterday afternoon, following the last race at Leicester in the unsaddling area, not sure if it was the head lad or groom, had a fag stuck in his mouth whilst he was holding on to the horse. As an inveterate smoker I am not criticising the habit. I just thought it not only looked unprofessional but if the horse had turned it’s head quickly it could quite easily have an eye full of hot ash. If I was the horse’s owner or trainer I’d be having stern words. Perhaps race course management should persuade those who enter the parade ring/unsaddling enclosure that smoking is no longer acceptable in those areas, particularly now that we have wall to wall TV coverage.

Good observation Ken, but the lads do a lot of hard work maybe he wanted to warm him self up in the cold weather and relax in a stressfull situation. Ken you should see in Ireland, they tie a horse to a little speed boat in a shipping lane and take it out for a swim!, horses are made of stern stuff as you know!
December 11, 2008 at 06:35 #196066Good point Mr. Wilson. Admittedly, at the time, I also thought that the guy in question must have had a nice touch on the winner and the adrenalin rush had brought on a nicotine craving. Been there myself. Oh well, at least the thread is helping towards my Listed status. Only joking, I’m quite happy to be a solid handicapper.

I agree that leading a horse while talking on the phone or smoking is dangerous…
