This horse rated only 13 and with over 3 stone to find with most of his rivals ran a remarkable race in the Wolves claimer last night.
Upped in trip and visored for the first time, he was very well backed. With a bit more luck in running it’s quite possible he could have won.
But one thing I noticed at the start was how coltish he was. Is it still possible for a gelding to get a significant erection? Looking at Sky Steps obviously they can but I’ve never come across it before.
September 5, 2014 at 10:45 #489781Synthetic testosterene works for human males,
in cases where they need it(war injuries)or
don’t(cheating in sports)
If a gelding received a testosterone shot
it might run faster – but wouldn’t that be illegal?September 5, 2014 at 11:16 #489783There are quite a few stories of it happening with geldings according to this thread on horse and hounds
September 5, 2014 at 15:38 #489794My 13 hand pony used to sport an erection and mount all the mares. He never got one in foal; he was examined by our vet and had been properly gelded. So yes they can.

Good read that BH
This Sky Steps run seemed odd, despite being "coltish", normally a negative he showed massive improvement. You would have thought the stewards would have at least asked the question regards the improvement especially with it being combined with strong market support for the horse.
An added twist was it was reported on the BHA website that the trainer Charlie McBride had been fined £140 for Sky Steps jockey failing to weigh out and the trainer giving no reason for this.
This report appears now to have disappeared from the BHA website, at least I can’t find it any more now and the jockey who failed to weigh out Danny Brock was listed as the jockey in the RP results section although it is correct now on their website, Andrew Mullen.
It will interesting to see how much the handicapper raises Sky Steps next week.

Trainer apparently says he hopes handicapper won’t be too hard on the horse

Is he quoted on that steeplechasing? As the horse is only rated 13 and you usually need one of 46 for a handicap, any rise of up to 33 lbs wouldn’t make any difference.

The official ratings don’t come out for a few days. He’s bound to lob on a few pounds but you’d imagine the rise wouldn’t be eye-poppingly stiff. That said, the handicapping system would be dysfunctional if it didn’t make it any harder for Sky Steps to win in the future.

Good man, never give up hope.

Apologies. It was a clumsy attempt at being funny (putting two words together before the final 2 words in my post)

I suspected that steeplechasing – "apparently" being the clue but gave you the benefit of the doubt You never know on here, I thought someone was on a massive wind up over something a bit ago and said as much but it turned out he was deadly serious

I knew you were inferring that he faced a stiff rise in the weights Joe.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
