    Incredible loss……

    https://www.racingpost.com/news/reports/teahupoo-completes-cheltenham-punchestown-stayers-hurdle-double-with-dominant-display-atTlY1c8fjgu/

What a joy he was and he owed no one a thing…. May he rest in peace

Yet another high profile fatality in the space of a few days.

What a terrible end to the season it has been. This wonderful horse contributed so much to the sport over his long career.

His victory in last season’s Stayers’ Hurdle aged 11 was a fantastic advert for all that is good in Jumps racing. To go from that to this sad end is just heartbreaking.

    RIP Sire Du Berlais

He’s bought such joy to so many people: didn’t deserve that. It was surely going to be his last race, too.

Can’t believe he’s gone … another outstanding hero. Very hard to watch this at the moment. Kilbeg King also lost in next race.

My thoughts this morning were why oh why don’t they give this horse an honourable retirement. This makes me so sad RIP Sire Du Berlais 😢

As saddened as we all are by this terrible news, I don’t think connections should be criticised for not having retired Sire Du Berlais.

He had been thriving on his racing in his later years, and won a championship race as recently as last season. He was doing what he was born and bred to do, and the evidence suggests he still had an appetite for it. Condolences to his connections who must be devastated.

A sad loss for the Elliott yard, really enjoyed seeing him win the Stayer’s Hurdle last year.

He was never going: was way out the back and I just assumed he’d been pulled up and I don’t understand why he wasn’t.

Very sad news. Sire Du Berlais was a fabulous horse over several seasons. His win in the Stayers Hurdle was clearly his career highlight but my favourite memories of him are his two wins in the Pertemps, the first of which was under a terrific ride from Barry Geraghty. It showed the horse’s battling qualities which everyone admired so much.

    Condolences to his connections.

Like you Moehat, I thought he’d been pulled up, so the news was disappointing, especially so close to retirement. He had his own way of doing things and the reason he wasn’t pulled up earlier was probably because………

Aintree 2023: In rear, cajoled along from 5th, not fluent 10th, soon pushed along, headway 3 out, led last, soon ridden, went clear run-in, kept on strongly.

Iam battling a bit with the jumps game now , back in day I was a massive fan over the flat , but now probably because I love the international flavour of the flat but also probably the poor races over jumps most of the season, but also the fatalities I am starting to find it more difficult to balance in my brain . However to be fair to JP when he retires a good one they do get retired to a life of royalty at Martinstown . I know plenty don’t cut it get sold on but that’s part of racing and horse trading .
A tough horse , sad to see he has been lost .

Thanks griff. I did wonder if that was his style of running. Having said that, even the commentator ( who quite often doesn’t even notice horses falling etc) said that he wasn’t enjoying himself and that was really early in the race. The jockey even whipped him just before it happened, too. I don’t usually rewatch a race if there’s a fatality but I did rewatch this one because I couldn’t understand what had happened.

Like helcat I’ve been struggling with the jumps since Desert Orchid retired and my nerves were in shreds.

Such a sad loss I can hardly believe we have lost the constant Sire Du Berlais just getting my head around Shishkin and this happens along with Kilibeg King.. just so so sad.
    I can’t watch NH anymore :rose: 😢

RIP To a wonderful horse who should have been looking forward to kicking his heels and rolling in the summer meadow.

Moehat he was pulled wasn’t he or do you mean don’t understand why wasn’t pu sooner? Racing post says was, in rear, pushed along from 4th, struggling when pulled up quickly before 3 out, fatally injured (op 9/1)

When he was obviously no longer in the race I assumed he’d been pulled up because the jockey finally realised that the horse wasn’t going to stay on in his usual way. But he should have been pulled up much sooner. Then, when I heard that he’d died my first thought was that he’d had a heart attack which I was why he was running so flat ( although that didn’t make much sense either). I don’t usually rewatch a race if there’s been a fatality but I watched this one because I didn’t understand what had happened as I was watching him the whole way round. He pulled him up on the flat when he was way behind. I’m really angry/upset about it.
