It amazes me how Major got to be PM , saying that after Thatcher maybe the Tories just wanted a conservative figure , I can think of little that he achieved in office , feel the same about Cameron , always found him odious

Cameron was doing well until he made a mess of the EU business – he and the Chancellor got the public finances in reasonable order after the financial crisis and he had the guts to take on the Church and strands within the Tory Party re same-sex marriage. He is far more honest than Johnson and much less of a hypocrit than Starmer. And, at the personal level, a straightforward and decent-seeming chap on the two fairly private occasions I’ve met him.

As to Blair, it is true the involvement in Iraq was voted for by Parliament, but on a false prospectus.

Cameron was mini me Blair , despite having recently won an election he badly misread the opinion of the nation on the EU referendum then ran for the hills when he lost , thank God he wasn’t in charge during covid , Boris is inept but not a coward

Cameron held the referendum because he was scared of losing votes to UKIP. He completely shafted the country by doing so and has, imo also brought about the end of the Union. Nothing decent about that. Oh, and then he just walked off and left the mess for everyone else to sort out.

I don’t much like David Cameron, but I don’t see what else he could have done.

If he hadn’t offered a referendum UKIP would have become a serious force in politics.

And having campaigned for Remain his position became untenable when Leave won.

In resigning, he showed more honour than Theresa May did by trying to push through a Brexit she too had been opposed to.

“The Conservatives are clearly the natural rulers in the UK – the results in my lifetime illustrate this.”

No they are not. They are only the ‘natural rulers’ in one of the four individual countries that make up the UK, not it in its entirety.

The rest of us have more sense it seems.

I actually nearly voted Conservative for purely selfish reasons at the time. It was something to do with free nursery places which would have benefitted my son and a cap on paying for nursing home care. Glad I didn’t ( I think I would have had a Dr Strangelove moment in the polling booth anyway if my hand had tried to tick the Tory box) because both of those manifesto pledges were ignored by Cameron who did, however, run with the referendum one. I went from not disliking him to loathing him. The thing I most disliked was when he waved that note around saying ‘there’s no money left’. I hated him in that moment and still do.

You could apply that logic to any seat in the UK, David.

To be fair, I did say the UK as a whole and in my 58 years the Conservatives have been in power for 34 of them and counting and in my adult life the score is 28 and counting to Labour’s 13.

Please don’t shoot the messenger, but that looks fairly conclusive to me.

And if you believe the left of the Labour Party and their “Tory Blair” jibes, well….

Smith is overrated its convenient for reputations to be brown bread

Blair and brown despaired of his lack of imagination (that’s on the record in a number of political bios) and outdated thinking and he was an alcoholic too

That’s not to say he wasnt capable and he may well have won although whether he would have known it after two bottles of grouse is a different matter

The best uk political book I’ve read for a while is gavin barwells account. It’s a superb read and very balanced

He clearly has no time for Boris but it does shine a different light on May. She wasnt right for the job in many ways but a very very dedicated and honourable politician

Liam fox comes out surprisingly well and arguably hes a bit of a neglected talent. Corbyn terribly but McDonnell as a decent smart guy

    Now the shock ..

Who was the leader that had the best rapport as well as the flexibility of mind that may found to be a delight to deal with?

    Will.amend that

It takes barwell a lot to actually rubbish someone. Hes very even handed

So it’s even more startling how much contempt he had for boris. And the reasons given are solid

I like barwell too. Went to cambridge but still got a solid Croydon accent. Strangely that says a lot

And hes brilliant and describing inner workings of gov

Cameron could comfortably have faced down a referendum

UKIP would never have been a serious presence at Westminster. Ultimately at general.elections voters veer away from.protest parties. They also took nearly as many votes off labour

I believe it was an issue that would have dissipated over time although the eu were stoking it with their stupid federalisation aims at the time but these have since dissipated

Well, they would say that, wouldn’t they?

It’s easy – as well as tasteless – to aftertime about the deceased.

Both would have been relative nobodies in a Cabinet had Smith lived – and maybe Britain would have been the better for it.

Like racing, politics is a game of opinions and mine is that John Smith, as The Daily Mirror (not my paper of choice but I liked this line) headlined it on the morning after he died, was: “The best prime minister we never had.”

    The daily mirror….

The idea that they would have been “no bodies” is absurd

Whats tasteless about the facts? What I’ve stated is on the record but It’s sentimental and naive to afertime about the deceased
